Hey guys,

As promised here is my review of I.S.P. by Kaleb Wade.

Kaleb Wade is fastly becoming one of my favorite creators.

I only just heard of him from his past release "Hacked," but from what I researched I also hear has has about 9-10 other releases.

I need to look those up, this guy thinks brilliantly about stuff.

So what is I.S.P?

Stands for Impromptu Sensory Perception

This is the main effect of the book, and is meant for us mentalists to go out and destroy laymen.

This is made to be done impromptu, which adds to the layering that you have nothing on you but possibly a couple of business cards, or napkins, or something, and a pen or sharpie.

This reminded me of an effect put out long ago by Richard Osterlind which I have performed in the past, but to be honest, even though the Osterlind bit is great, I kind of like this more, looks more organic and impromptu, and can be done at a moment's notice.

The book is about 102 pages long, and Kaleb treats you to a Foreword by Terry Tyson, followed by an Introduction.

This first effect I.S.P, is broken into 4 phases, with each phase getting more impossible than the last. the last phase is optional.

I wanted to wait to write this review until I actually tried this out, and indeed I did, just the other night on Saturday, and the reactions were insane.

Now there is a MOVE, that you will need to learn, but it is not knuckle busting, and Kaleb tells you and explains what you need to do to be able to do it right with no suspicion.

Kaleb then describes 2 Subleties that you can use, if you ever so wish.

I.S.S.P.

Basically the first 2 phases are the same from I.S.P. above, but when you reach the last phase(3rd), there is a slight difference.

P.A.T.E.O Force

Kaleb describes the way he performs this and gives you the scripting for a routine.

Thoughts: I have used the PATEO force more times than I reckon, and it always kills. Such a simple tool can go miles and miles beyond a simple trick.

Pay attention to this section!

In this section, Kaleb also describes different techniques that you can apply to the PATEO force, I wont mention them here because it will be giving it away, but lets just say that they are tools/techniques that we all know, but just applied to the PATEO force

MIST

What is MIST?

It is Kaleb's version of an old effect from a legend in the field of mentalism, with a surefire method, and Kaleb's take is fooling, brilliant, and magical!

I have also performed this last weekend, and this is by far my favorite effect from this book! Worth its weight in gold simply by the reactions I received.

After Kaleb explains the method, he treats you to an Alternate ending if you so wish to go down that route.

MIST-IFY

This uses the same method as MIST, but there is a difference in that the prediction is out in the open before the effect begins.

I like this, but I do not think it is better than MIST, even if the prediction is out in the open from the start.

There is also a kicker to this effect that adds more to the end of the trick.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Kaleb is sharp, bright, and you can tell he cares about the impact his magic/mentalism will have over an audience.

To me this book was worth it for the main effect I.S.P. and MIST. Well worth it!

No wonder everyone on this thread was praising the book, it is that good!

Thanks again, until next time

This is another brilliant release from Kaleb, it really builds on his Occult release, and allows you to do this totally impromptu, he gives tips on how to improve the third phase from Occult, and even how to do this for a single participant.

I can't really add much more to what others have said, other than if you are looking for a solid routine that you can do wherever you can get hold of some cards and a pen, then this is it.

All I can add is a cryptic tip - I have setup the ending to the MIST routine using another recent release that has its own thread here, to make this even more 'on the fly' so I don't necessarily have to carry what is needed for the ending, if anyone wants more details feel free to PM and let me know you own this and I will happily show you what I have done. Although I am sure those that know can work it out!

This is fantastic and well worth the purchase.

Kaleb mentioned this idea to me earlier and it reminded me of a 'previous previous release'... I'd love to have a chat about the idea.

Thanks for sharing, Rich. No way! I had the same idea with MIST. I think the tool you're referencing elevates the routine and adds to the impromptu nature of the effect.

Cheers,

Mark Elsdon recently reviewed I.S.P. on his ‘A Metabolic Fig’ newsletter. Below is an excerpt from his review.

“The whole thing is like a post-graduate course in how the layering of direct methods and deceptive subtleties can combine to amplify the perceived effect. As the saying goes, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler”. This is going into my EDC repertoire for certain.”

I have this and am excited to perform it! Simple, clean thinking on Kaleb's part. I love the freedom of being able to make this up on the spot, but if you choose to have pre-made cards -- if you own the Drawing Test Cards by Luca Volpe and Paul McCaig, they work perfectly with this routine. The Drawing Test Cards come with 10 images, and although you only need 8 for I.S.P., you can actually perform the routine with 10 images if you like. I can see getting a lot of use out of this!

I again am so glad this is getting the praise it deserves. In addition to I.S.P. and Mist, which I very much like, there is also excellent advice on how to use and handle the cards. In particular, the suggestions on the PATEO force are really top notch and an approach I will definitely be using from now on.

I also agree with Mr Mindbender about using The Drawing Test Cards as an alternative to the Kaleb’s suggested cards. I have long been a fan of DTC and I can see they lend themselves well to Kaleb’s routines, including Mist.

Thank you for the tip about the DTC cards Mindbender. I was not aware of these. Sound perfect for ISP as a carry around.

Mist is my favourite routine from the ebook! Especially when used with Rich Morrell’s idea for the surprise kicker!

I performed ISP at least a dozen times last night during a walkaround gig. I modified it a tiny bit where required depending on whether participants were standing or sitting, and also played around with two or three phases. Bottom line is people loved it…..reactions ranged from delight to genuine shocked disbelief. The bonus is that it is simple and enjoyable to perform. What’s not to like. I should probably say that the MIST variant remains my go to EDC effect if someone ever asks to see something.

Steve, did you draw the symbols on the cards for each performance or did you have the symbols pre drawn?

Hi Neil. For the paid performance I had the cards already prepared. For a casual performance I usually draw the symbols there and then which I feel / hope emphasises the ‘off the cuff’ nature of the effect.

Thanks Steve. It is really helpful to know both options are goers and am pleased to learn you are getting so much out of this effect. As soon as I read I.S.P. I knew it was something special.
