Does anyone still make a good quality CSB set? Mark Mason seems to always be out of stock. Johnsons is no longer in business. Kueppers quality has been subpar in the sets I have seen.

Johnson may be out of business, but their CSB sets are still fairly available.
I'd try posting a "want to buy" (WTB) listing in the buy/sell group.

TCC's set is decent but they made the (IMHO poor) choice to use an English Penny as the insert coin.

You can also buy one of Roy's sets 2nd-hand where you can see if it was a hit or a miss.

Do you want dollar sized or half? What coins?

Bluether makes excellent dollar sized, and while the Oliver magic one isn't as good as Johnson, if you want a Walking Liberty instead of Kennedy, the price point is very fair, and the quality is pretty good. Their Chinese coin is one of the better ones out there, IMHO.

The Lassen CSB with Infinity Edge System is the best CSB set I've personally seen.

I've owned CSB sets from Mark Mason and Keuppers. They each had strengths and weaknesses.

I like the suggestion to seek out a Johnson set. If your budget allows, and if you can find one, a Lassen CSB is the one to own.

My vote goes to Ronald Davies - https://www.facebook.com/ronald.davies.37

I have both a .50C and 1.00 set from him. Exceptional quality.

Very disappointed in my walking liberty CSB set from Mark Mason. The s**** has rough edges and does not handle all that well.

Rough in what respect?

Depending...this can sometimes be easily corrected with 0000 grade steel wool and a light touch.

I would second any CSB that were made by the late Lassen. But they are pretty pricy and hard to come by. You could also try TCC . I have both Walker CSB and clad version. They are good for the price.

I miss Lassens work he was certainly the best. I have a few of his items, the man really knew what he was doing.

Has anyone with the TCC gaffs tried aging them using the methods outlined in their tutorial? I'm nervous to try

It's a commercial product, that you only get when you buy the coins from TCC.

TCC provided the link and password after I contacted them for it.

They were very quick to respond.

There's nothing proprietary in their video.

Basically, the patina solution they use is JAX Black for Copper, then they demonstrate pre-cleaning and removing the patina using common techniques with fine grain wet-sand paper and steel wool. These techniques are available from others on YouTube (I've previously posted a link to a widely followed video).

If anyone wants the TCC video link, simply reach out to TCC via email.

Aging the coins isn't difficult, but it may require a couple passes to get it right (which isn't a big deal...just dunk them in JAX and start over). Personally, I haven't used sandpaper to remove patina on my coins because I don't want to risk removing more copper (or silver). I prefer to do it entirely with steel wool. However, if you want TCC's results with specific highlights, then it requires sandpaper followed by steel wool.

Well they do sell it with their products.

So lucky you, they probably assumed you owned some of their products.

And since "you already had it on youtube", then I guess ya didn't need it really eh?

I was curious to know what patina fluid TCC recommends and if TCC does something different in their aging. The process is similar to what others do with some variation in the method, and the patina fluid is different than what others have mentioned, so for me it was informative. More info is always appreciated.

Have a Happy New Year!

Have a few Lassen sets, with boxes and when I went to pull out a CSB set, had some discoloration.
Todd would usually just have me send back an he would take care of it, but....
Toothpaste?
Thanks!

Toothpaste is too abrasive for me.
For copper I soak it in ketchup. Nevr-Dull for brass and clad coins.
Wright's Sliver Cream for silver coins.
