This is a routine I have thought about for a while. I never liked the Goshman and Klause versions, as I thought they were nothing more that pretty transpositions. However, when Latta performed his version, he extended the magic by adding a middle sequence, and made the moon the silver coin. This now intrigued me. As I looked over the routine, I liked Latta's idea of vanishing the sun coin, but did not like his method for reappearance. So, I added some props which helped make more sense out of the second phase, allowed me to do some stuff that I couldn't do without them, and allowed me to add a coin to impossible location sequence. Here is my version, I hope you enjoy it.

By the way, are there other published sun and moon routines out there? And how so they differ?

Hi Michael, as an overall routine I like it.
The eclipse phase is very nice, not sure if it will put too much heat in the coin, but it is magical.
On the other hand there are two moves that make your hands to be to closed that do not look clean, some kind suspicious. But it could be just me.
It is a nice routine for an old prop

Pabloinus, thanks for watching and for your comments. The vanish sequence is from Latta's routine. I think the vanish works well and makes sense (magicians would know the method, but certainly not laymen, especially because they examine the coins at the beginning). I feel that Latta's method of making the coin appear again is the part that actually puts the heat on the coin, and is clumsy in that he seems to be listening to the coin which never made sense to me. As for the hand thing, I understand what you are saying. There are some subtleties that need to be adjusted, but those flaws will be eliminated as I continue to get comfortable with the routine (first day of putting the performance together). Thanks again for your thoughts!

Well, there is also Rob Thompson’s SAMOYA (an acronym, as I understand it, for Sun And Moon… I forget what the O, Y, and A stand for).

I liked the routine as a whole, yet the magician in me was expecting something more with the globe and pocket.
As far as other references, I believe there was something by Fred Kaps but I do not remember, sorry.

Looks good.

The ancients worried that the sun might not return after the eclipse, that it brought the end if the world. You probably have enough misdirection in the last phase to get the globe into the purse. Smile

The box is just for ease of carrying the stuff around. I could easily take the stuff out of my pockets. At the end, I just put the felt bag over the globe and put it away. Very easy cleanup. Wravyn, the globe and pocket serve an important purpose, they are not just window dressing. There really isn't more to do with them as the routine is circular, ending as it began. However, it is fun to think of ways to extend the magic, like producing a miniature sun and moon, vanishing the props and starting over with everything reappearing in the box, etc. Sometimes though, the best solution is the simple solution.

There are a bunch of other sun/moon style routines like this. Samoya certainly comes to mind (I believe the OYA was "on your ***), as does Soleil et Lune, which I think was the name of Klause's version.
But the recent one I thought of first was Sean Goodman's Duo: https://www.saturnmagic.co.uk/saturn-mag......man.html

I had a similar reaction to Wravyn watching the video. I enjoyed it, but was expecting something else for a feeling of finality.
I also personally prefer the mention of east/west as justification for why things rise/fall on one side to the other, over "well, they're rarely seen together, except for all those times that they are."

Unfortunately, the video of Dr. Rubinstein is no longer online.
I have seen on youtube a handling that I like very much. Maybe you like it too:

Credits go among others to: "Encyclopedia of coin magic" by Shigeo Futagawa and Shigeo Takagi (but only Japan).

My video is no longer available because it was a presentation of an initial idea that has blossomed into perhaps my best creation. I have decided to release it to the magic community, and have produced a limited special edition of 100 sets. I have been performing with my prototype set, but once the commercial set is ready (still waiting for the final part of the set to arrive), I will release the promos and performances. Likely in 2-3 weeks. I think you will all be excited when S.E.M. (The Sun, the Earth, and the Moon) is finally released.

Revisited Klause's Soleil Et Lune from the Collected Almanac and you summed it up quite well—just a bunch of pretty transpositions.

I know some of you live here and don't look at the trick coin section, so I thought I would just post a live performance here. You can get more information in the trick coin section if you venture over, but in the meantime enjoy this clip

Reminds me of coin under card meets
Roth's coin to globe.
All are interesting premises.

I appreciate thoughts and playing that lead
to variations on a theme. These days my hands are more
comfortable with a harmonica than coins.

Glad you enjoyed it, Harris. I love this routine because it has so many magic moments. Transpositions, vanishes, appearances in impossible locations, changes, and penetrations. Plus, you start and end clean, there is no need to switch coins using your pockets (always suspicious) or a switch coin purse (the switches occur out in the open right inder the noses of the spectators)
, and the routine is modular so you can shorten it if you don't have the time to perform the full routine. Plus it is not just a coin trick, as there is magic with the globe as well.
I use this in my act as the trick before my closer (The Other Hand), but it can also fit into any part of a show, because it is so different.
