I wonder whether someone can give some information about the history of the optical illusion used in Tenyo's "Moon Spinner", i. e. the "coin from spinning sphere". Does it has a scientific name? Are there any references in the scientific literature?

And last but not least: When was it first used in magic (I am aware of DeLand's "Phantom Base Ball" in 1908, but the illusion was already known at this time - any earlier references would be welcome).
