I haven't done any matrix routines yet. But I recently saw "That's Ridiculous!" done by Paul Gertner on his Penguin Live Lecture. If that counts as "a matrix type routine," then it's the best one I've seen. Granted, I have not seen a huge number of them.

A bit off topic, but in cleaning out some of my magic "stuff", I ran across my original Matrix manual, from Mr. Schneider, printed in the 70's, off a typewriter!! So cool to see the original and read through it. I bought it at a now, long closed, magic store in Washington DC in the 70's. This routine is still a classic.

In my June 1982 lecture notes/book, "Last Call", I included the following idea.

Matrix Card Turnover: For many years now I have been performing Al Schneider's "Matrix" routine with the aid of a Flipper coin. My favorite part of the routine being; after the "Matrix" routine has been performed, I perform a reverse "Matrix" using four coins and two cards. I start by showing two cards fronts and backs (I use Jerry Andrus' "Miser's Miracle" to conceal the extra coin hidden under the cards). After showing the cards via "Miser's Miracle", I place one card facedown on the table, the card that is hiding the extra coin. Next I turn one card over on top of the two regular fifty cent coins and the open Flipper. Unbeknownst to the spectator, the four coins (two coins and open Flipper) are about to turn into three coins. I slide the card face up under the two regular fifty cent coins and open Flipper like a scoop, I pause, and say, "four coins and two cards". I now slowly turn the card facedown. As the card is turned facedown, the open Flipper will do its thing, close turning the four coins into three.

I repeat the transposition of one coin from one card and to the other card two more times. After the third transposition, I place the flipper with the two regular coins and leave one of the regular coins under the first card. I vanish the coin under the first card and lift the second card showing that all four coins have gather under the card. As a clean up, I toss the four gathered coins from my right hand and into my left hand. The four coins (open flipper and two regular coins) turn into three as they fly and land on top of the secretly held left hand coin.

I hope that you enjoy and will try this idea

Flash matrix reminds me of something that Doc Eason said about the importance of having an opener that says "watch this!!!!!"

While not as stunning as some of the aforementioned assembly routines, I have always liked Shigeo Takagi’s routine. I guess I’m partial, because I met him at a convention in the seventies and he gave me the illustrated instructions written in Japanese. I learned the routine from the very detailed illustrations.

This is my take on the plot. It uses an unconventional method. I taught this on Reel Magic several months ago.

I’m a big fan of Jason Bornes translocation. Not a matrix but a great trick

Wow, Armando Lucero--he's a master. Completely different, and baffling, approaches to classic coin-magic plots.

Thanks dj.

Lucero is amazing! 😁

Many levels to this effect, as Ed Oschmann above also nicely shows, just depends on you. 😁👍🏽

*Oh, and hey, speaking of Matrix here, what ever happened to Al Schneider? Haven’t seen the lovable old curmudgeon around in quite a while now? Hope he’s OK.

I like the slow and deliberate pace of this one. The last coin is pretty good. https://youtu.be/n0TY4B6WAyo

I'm not comparing myself to anyone but I believe this is the only one handed matrix I call crimp trix because I use the crimp palm to pull this off

You also have some interesting timing of events that enhance this approach.

Any thoughts on a lead in to the matrix effect? Maybe something where you can tell if the coin is heads or tails under the card?
