Hello everyone,

We have been on the new server for over two months now, and with the exception of a few early hiccups, it has been operating superbly. In fact, it has been operating so superbly that Steve and I have decided to remove the forum selection requirement on the search engine, at least for the time being. As a result, you may now search without having to select a specific forum. That option still remains, of course, if you wish to limit matches from a particular forum.

This may or may not be permanent, depending on how the new server handles the extra load. None of the processing scripts have been changed, with the exception of removing the forum selction requirement. The scripts and database structure are sound, it was simply a matter of the old server not being able to handle searching the Café's 5+GB database. This test period will tell us if the new server can.

This new server has 24 processor cores (as compared to the old server's 8 cores) and 48 GB of memory (the old server had only 6GB), and I'm confident it can do the job. If not, I will simply restore the forum selection requirement.

I will be monitoring server health and let you all know how it goes.

Thank you!

Great news thanks

Al, I assume you're joking but go to the search button in upper right corner. The new page has many options. Just fill in what you want to search for, ie; user name or key word. Fill in whatever other criteria you want and either select a forum or leave to search all forums. Submit.

Great work! I was thinking last week when I was trying to do a search why I had to pick a forum. Like other people have noted, the searches where hit or miss....and mostly miss. Thanks again for bringing the search engine to the 21th century.

Maybe. This has been discussed before, and I'm still not sure if that's a good idea site/server-wise. The Café is already being marked as a spamming site (though any emails sent are specifically at the request of each user). Can you imagine if we started sending subscription emails? We might never stay off spam lists then.

Thanks for the steps taken.

You may consider conducting a semi subscription to a thread.

There are 3 major statuses of subscriptions:

1. The current status, which we cannot subscribe.
2. The opposite status, which might block us thru anti spam servers.
3. and a semi subscription, which will notify us for post in an interested thread.
this alert will jump only when we log in.

When most people refer to subscriptions of that nature they are usually referring to email notifications. It would be fairly easy - and absolutely spam-safe, of course - to come up with a subscription feature that works only on the site itself, but I'm not sure that is what most people would really want.

If anyone has opinions on this please send me a direct PM and tell me what *you* would want.
