Years ago I worked at a magic shop and they had an effect which I thought was called "In the News." It was a paper that allowed you to pour a glass of water into it then turn it upside down. When ever you wanted you turned it upside down again and out came the water.
Does anybody know what the name of this effect is and where it can be purchased? Thanks.

"In the News" is correct, most magic shops carry it.
If there is no shop near you, just do a google search for "In the News magic trick".

It's just a Tenyo prop. You can also find the gimmick sold alone to put into your own newspaper. Somehow...I think the routine I came up with this about 20 years ago as a kid seems to be very similar to Fielding West's routine from what I've heard. I've never seen him perform it, but I've been told. Great minds, I guess..

I believe in Jarle Leirpoll's video "Pocket Power" he demonstrates how to to gaff a standard newspaper so that you can perform this without a gimmick.

I have it also. I've only used it a couple of times. I may need to dig it up and work it into a routine.

Yes, it's definitely "In the News".

I bought mine from Hamley's Magic Department way back in the 60s for the princely sum of 8/6! Wow! that dates me!.

Best Wishes,

Yes, this is a often overlooked effect. I use it in most every show.

Fielding West does have a nice routine, however he does not use the "In The News" gimmick. His DVD explains his method and theory.

This (In the News) can also be purchased at the Magic Warehouse.

I thought I would put my two cents in here...
I think you will like them.

Basically, In the news is a foo can newspaper.
I know this trick because it is in Gene Andersons Newspaper Magic.

Here is how to make the gimmick...
Buy a large ziplock freezer bag and cut the zipper off.
You need freezer bags because of the thickness of the plastic.
Put the bag on your ironing board and lay a piece of paper over it.
It's very helpful to cut the paper the size of the bag.
This helps you know where the bag is under the paper.
Or just use transparent paper.
Now with the edge of the iron, rub over half of the opening then down at angle in the middle.
This will fuse the two sides of the bag into a foo can figuration.

Now another thing I came up with...
Put some OOM into the bag.

You now pour in water, but pour out milk.

If this is too much for this open forum, please move it to the secret session or something like that.
Please don't just delete it.

What I have said is good stuff.

I do this version when I perform the "Magic coloring Book" when I start in birthday parties, but only the gimmick,i glued the gimmick on the inside back part of the book,I fill with water the book, kids blow and its comes out in different colors,at this point the drawings are in black and white...is a good idea if you like use it!
Thanks,

Good idea Hansel. I love seeing magicians come up with novel ways to use standard gimmicks.

A big pat on the back for Hansel. Nothing like thinking outside of the box, or in this case inside of the Book!

I got the version going as "Absorbing News"...same thing, another name. This is a good and unusual idea. I used the newspaper to vanish a cane and then the liquid. Yes its rough on the gimmick!
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Two drops of easter egg color.I also use it in a lota bowl.I have one of my assistant sneak it in towards the end of the routine when I know the bowl has a couple more fills inside. I calculate it in leters.
