Hey all. I have been interested in finger ring magic for a couple years now and have put together a couple routines using just sleight of hand that include color changes, vanishes and appearances, ring on rope, ring and wand (pen), and other effects along those lines.

Does anyone else have an interest in finger ring magic that could give me some insight into what rings you have bought, what rings you have bought and wish you didn't, ring material, effects, etc?

Thanks

I don't know to what extent you have gone with rings, but you might look into Mercuring by Jay Sankey, Banded by Garrett Thomas, and a pk ring.

Hey thanks Wells. I should have said the specific purchased effects I already have.
I bought Mercuring years ago but lost the regular ring and only have the "C". I really should get a Mercuring-type ring made up with some ring I already have because you can do some great stuff with it.
I'm looking into Banded but the funds are lacking at the moment.
I'm not really into pk stuff but more into effects where the ring is the focus as opposed to where the ring is just a tool.

If you're looking for sleight of hand routines why not try:
"Finger Ring Magic [Worlds Greatest Magic]" - By LL Publishing. (Best Buy)
or
"The Relentless String & Ring Routine" - Bob miller.

"Magic With Finger Rings" - Jerry Mentzer has some effects with 'special' finger rings.

Dan Fleshman's Ring & String routine. Been doing it for years and never fails to get a great reaction.

Jeff,

I went to Wal-Mart and bought two nice silver rings ($9.00 each). Took the gaff ring and one silver ring to the Jewelers and had them cut the ring to match the gaff. Now I have a great looking set of rings to do the effect. I didn't like the look of the rings that came with the effect.

Not such a fan of PK rings..everything clicks and sticks to it...when I would perform an effect with it..because of the pull it would make a large click sound

That's a great book! I also like Mark Leveridge's routine and modified one of his moves for use in my routine.

Holy Smokes, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Gregory Wilson's "Ring Leader" yet. The DVD isn't inexpensive, but it's a masterpiece which will give one the basics to develop a routine to use for the rest of one's performing career. That plus the aforementioned "Ring Thing" by Garrett Thomas should give you the ammo to create a cornerstone in your repetoire.

Another thing worth serious consideration is Jay Scott Berry's "Ring and Ribbon."

Hocus-Pocus carries both DVDs.

Best,
MJ

Ring Thing (Thomas): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgmVvhxL864

Ring Leader (Wilson): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bFNUz7G8-A

Jay Scott Berry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bFNUz7G8-A

Technically speaking, Jay's routine uses an Ellis-type ring, but a lot of the moves can be incorporated with a finger ring. I learned his routine from a video I purchased directly from him back in the day at one of his seminars; and I use it with an Ellis ring since I also peform R Paul Wilson's wonderful ring on wand (stick) routine which uses an Ellis ring. But like I mentioned, some of the ideas on Jay's DVD can be applied to finger rings so it may be nice to use as a reference while coming up with one's own routine.

My favorite finger ring trick is Gary Kurtz's Attraction. It's in his book and on one of his DVDs. Two rings taken from a couple are place on either end of a pencil or object like that. The two rings then come together showing their bond.

Here's Jay's routine. If one ever gets the chance to see Jay's complete show in person then one should certainly take advantage of it. I recall Mark Wilson stating that Jay's act is one of the most magical he's ever seen.

Wow MJ. While I am a little unsure if I like his performance style of being really slow and dramatic for everything and then speeding up on certain sleights, I think that was an awesome routine overall.

Thanks for sharing. I'll surely integrate some of that into my routine.

Where can I get a ring like the one Jay Scott Berry uses in that performance?
