Are the plans to create this effect available anywhere? Or is this a proprietary thing?
Thanks! |

I'm sure it's public domain but I don't know of any plans.

I was thinking that it may be published in a book.

Is the box in the Stewart James book? I have to rest a bit so I can lift the book off my shelf.

Yes a good history of it and the original effect as outlined in Jinx. The heaviest book on my bookshelf.

What a neat trick!
It's also in Practical Mental Effects - more affordable, and WAAAY lighter than the other tomes suggested!

My mistake, I meant to write "Automated Sefalaljia". Not automatic.
This was made by, I believe, Jeff Busby. Just recently hocus-pocus sold one for several thousand dollars. Every once in a while there will be one on an auction site for sale. Thanks! |

Yes, I made a few for Jeff. I think Jeff and I first started discussing it in the late 1980s and I made stuff for him into the mid 1990s when I moved on and started Tabman USA.
Is there a link to a picture of it?? I'd love to see it. I took few photos in those pre digital days. -=tabman

Thanks. Jeff always liked using Oak and those brass corner fittings from Constantines. I liked mahogany and walnut and never liked using hardware store stuff on anything. I made all my parts for the Tabman Tables and the other stuff I originated but Jeff is/was an advertising copy writing genius. Even though we had our differences I'll always be happy that we worked together those few years. He was really the best at that time. None better.
Right now, Im putting together a kit based on the original The Junx #69 article by TA on SJ. I do plan to come up with something a little different for the #4 and #5 effects.

For the Spellbinder Sefalaljia Routine (From The Wizards' Journal #10 on my site), the glass trick is #5. Since milk no longer is delivered in glass bottles and the card board cartons lack visibility, I have chosen to use the Uday Wonder Glass which does virtually the same thing.
My routine; nothing is automatic, I'm afraid. 1. Ball in Glass 2. Knotting the silk 3. Knotting a rope 4. Ring on Rope # 1 (The original Stewart James' routine) 5. Ghost Milk Vanish 6. Ring on Rope # 2 7. Red and White Linking Ropes #1 8. Red and White Linking Ropes #2 9. Shrinking Rope 10. Bell, Book, and Candle Routine Wonder Glass source: http://www.magicproshop.com/wonder-glass-uday-p-8851.html For those who think the plastic crate Sefalaljia is gauche, I personally use a homemade wooden box that burns itself with pentagram designs, much like the crate in the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" movie, and following the methods I've described in my "Poltergeist" article in The Wizards' Journal #6. This is actually where my Sefalaljia Box becomes automatic- the burning pentagrams and the shaking and rattling of the box before the routine begins is all handled electrically at a safe distance from my bungling fingers.

You can still get milk in bottles if you buy from local dairies at farmers' markets. My wife and I get ours in quart bottles from the Lady-Lane Farm in Mulino, Oregon.
