Can anyone tell me any good resources on the web for info on Victorian magic - effects, magicians etc?

Failing that, the best books on the subject. It has to be Victorian though - 1837 - 1901

Even though it's a more recent book, take a look at Charles Bertram: The Court Conjurer by Edwin Dawes (1997).

Also, check out The Modern Conjurer and Drawing Room Entertainer by C. Lang Neil.

The Hoffmann books are also an excellent source of material of that period.

Some of them are even on line at the Learned Pig.

Also check out "Victorian Magic" by Geoffrey Fredrick Lamb. I have my own copy, won on Ebay, but just saw it available at Amazon.com.

Posted: Nov 24, 2004 3:23pm Just received my copy of Victorian Magic. A great read actually - lovely stories about Houdin, Maskelyne etc.

I particularly liked the fact that Robert-Houdin only got into magic because he asked a bookseller for a book on watchmaking as was his father's profession but was accidentally given a book on conjuring and the rest is history.

Try Tom Sawyer's Victorian-Age Conjuing Books, a scholarly book chock full of information on books of that era.

More detail, please. Is that the title of the book?
