Does anyone have any advice how to get one's first close up magic gig? As in a setting with a table where people sit and watch, not strolling. Who do you recommend to reach out to?

I would seek an open mic night that allows more than just music. When your slot comes up walk up to the mic on stage and explain you are a closeup magician and you will be set up over there (point to your table) and doing closeup magic in between acts. Unless you are willing to perform your closeup from the stage which would be a possibility as well, then go to your table for the rest of the night for an hour or so.

Does joining local SAM chapter typically provide opportunities for close up performances?

They sure do, in fact it's encouraged at the meetings. Members can critique your performance to help.
Also, there are plenty of opportunities for fundraisers where you could volunteer to hone your skills. Keep your eyes open and seek out opportunities. Once you feel in your heart you're good enough and have something to offer, you can market yourself and get PAID. A working magician years ago once told me and it's true. Do you know what performing free shows gets you? More free shows.
