I'd like to get an appearing cane... anyone have any experience with either one of these? Or possibly you prefer another?

https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/stage-......e-metal/

https://vikingmagic.com/products/appeari......e&_v=1.0

The one from vanishing dot com says

"After years of research and experimentation, Bond Lee and Magicalism have finally created the perfect appearing cane—"The Ultra Cane."

It is lighter, smaller, stronger..."

It is supposed to be very fast expansion and acc to some reviews its also the quietest...

Has anyone ordered one of these ultracanes?

The vikingmagic one is 11 dollars more and I don't see much info or reviews but I have been very satisfied with the products I've bought there so far.

I don't have an opinion on which of those canes is better , but I do want to highly recommend this video tutorial by Jay Scott Berry:

https://www.jsbwiz.com/shop.html#!/Appea......45936515

It's a great handling of the appearing cane, quiet and mysterious, instead of the givewaway "snap/whoosh" sound as the cane pops open.

The other handling I like is twirling the silk , like this video:

This JSB handling is based on Shimada's cane production published in Genii magazine.

Indeed, yes! It is based on Shimada's handling. Jay gives full credit to Shimada for his influence in the introduction of the video.

If anyone is searching for it, it is found in Genii Vol. 49, No. 5 , November 1985, Shimada on the cover.

I should also mention that J. Neal explains his own elegant handling of the Shimada version (and there is a video of him performing it) in the December 2018 issue of Genii magazine (Vol. 81, No. 12). Although it's a bit different because in J.Neal's version it is both an appearing cane and vanishing cane effect . If you're a Genii subscriber look it up. If you're not a subscriber , you can probably find a copy of the Dec. 2018 issue of Genii on eBay or maybe even sitting on a shelf at your local brick & mortar magic shop (if you're lucky enough to have such a thing).

In the Genii article, J.Neal writes:

Quote:
"I use a Harahkan [vanishing] Cane from Japan. (I have noticed that every time I spell Harahkan, it comes out differently and in every case, my spell check rejects it. Forgive me). The special feature of this brand of cane is that it never will rust and is made with a bronze finish. This always appealed to me as I associate the brown color with the solidity of wood and it contrasts well with a black background.

However, I see no reason that any other band of Vanishing Cane cannot work as well. It is important that the cane’s ferrule extend beyond the closed cane for about half an inch. The ferrule is the part at the center of the cane that the audience sees. This will be important in the handling. If you find this not to be the case on your cane, a tube of thin brass or aluminum can be glued or attached to the ferrule to lengthen it."

It's a great routine, so get your hands on that issue of Genii magazine.

Good luck finding a Harahkan Vanishing Cane (no longer made). Not easy to find and not inexpensive when they do show up for sale (I've lost a couple of auctions for a Harahkan cane),but reportedly the best. (J.Neal's use of it is a sterling endorsement, in my book).

So now that brings us back around to the original topic: "Which Appearing (or Vanishing) Cane to use ?"

The Harahkan canes were the very best. I had made the cane to bouquet using special extra long Walsh canes but the Harahkan's were better. The Walsh canes and most other canes were made of metal sheared to width. That meant the metal had a sharp edge. The Harahkan was rolled to width so there are no sharp edges.
I was lucky that I invested in several of them when they were readily available.

I've been using a Harrakan Vanishing Cane for over 50 years. Bought it when I was in Japan. Never oiled it. It works as well today as it did back when I bought it.

The original post was asking about the Bond Lee 'Ultra Cane' (appearing cane). I would also be interested in reading a review from anyone who has the Bond Lee Ultra Cane. (especially if you have used others , such as the original Walsh cane or the Harahkan cane, how does the Ultra Cane compare ?)

Other topics on the Café have discussed the various canes available , but these topics are from 2014 - 2016 so the information is not current , but may be useful reference for purchasing a used cane -

There are probably additional topics if you dig deep with the search engine.

This guy is elegant and well-rehearsed... I think I like his performance in this video the best so far

I'm gonna buy an appearing cane but I would love also to have the vanishing cane... is there one that does both? Or is it one or the other and you gotta switch/ditch the appearing one first?

Yes, agreed, Scott Cervine is elegant and well-rehearsed. It was a loss to magic when he decided to retire from performing magic.

Yes, usually you would have a matched set, one appearing cane, with one matching vanishing cane. (but in the examples posted above , both Jonathan Neal and Scott Cervine are using the "vanishing" cane as an appearing cane. Neil Foster and Dale Salwak used a Walsh Appearing Cane for both appearing and vanishing. You can see Dale Salwak perform it as his opening effect here: https://youtu.be/qPzL2N5_FkA?t=21

You may want to search out some of the literature on the subject:
