Do a lot of free shows when starting out. But, remember to spend a lot of time just talking with people. You don't have to be doing magic the whole time. Ask about the people you meet. Also, try to let the local newspaper know you will be doing the benefit. Nothing wrong with getting some publicity out of it. I did magic professionally for 16 years and went through this phase early on.
