I realize that this post is not about "building your own," but I've always found that some of the most well-informed & lateral thinkers are found in this area of the Café.
So, I'm throwing out this challenge that has been something of a frustration for me.

I have a couple of wooden framed whiteboards that are roughly 17" X 14" X 1"
Unfortunately, they are slightly larger than my stage case.
They also don't seem to fit into any other padded travel bag/case that I've come across, without getting into ridiculously large sized bags.

What I'm looking for is some kind of light carrying padded case that can accommodate 2 of these boards - ideally with some internal separation.
So, the bag/case/sleeve should be have minimum internal dimensions of 17" X 14" X roughly 3" in width.

Price is also an issue. I'd really like to not have to spend a lot on this (under $40 would be ideal).

My first thought was a laptop bag, but even the largest I've come across (for a 21") is too small.
I also checked hard-shell aluminum cases for all kinds of industries, none of which seem to work.

Am I missing some kind of bag/case category that I should look into?

I've actually seen that site.
Unfortunately, by the time I add foam inserts, I have blown way past my budget.

Frank, artist portfolios were one of the options I considered. I can find an inexpensive portfolio that will work, but it's simple nylon without any padding.
I'd prefer not getting into modifying anything.

Seamstress? A simple divided neoprene envelope would do it, but I have no clue if materials and/or labor would fit your budget. Likely not.

I have no idea what the prices are, but they remind me a bit of the case that Steve Axtell made for the Drawing Board magic trick at one time. His was a similar design, but made from coreplast.

Fiberboard case made for art prints. You can also look at used trade show display case. Several of them are telescoping. You can pick them up cheap sometimes on Ebay. Then you don't need much more padding that a soft flannel blanket around them. You won't want to buy them new. But used, they are often more for the shipping than the case.
