I remember picture cards that magically tell stories by Guy Hollingsworth. Not sure of the author or spelling but it is worth looking into.

I want to contribute a great Storytelling game system called "Once Upon a Time" that are a bunch of cards with pictures and titles and you deal them out and take turns making stories with them. There are expansions that have more specialized categories as well. Here's a link to the pages on Boardgamegeek.com; lots of resources there.

A great exercise for these games and expansions would be to take a classic prop or something you want to tell a story about, deal out some random cards from the different categories, and make up a story about it that makes sense.

Here's another resource; I've been into storytelling since the early 1990s and have a pretty extensive library of storytelling resources. One of my favorites for actually building a story is a relatively unknown book by Vladimir Propp called "Morphology of the Folktale." He analyzed a huge number of Russian folk tales and identified patterns which he broke down into identifiable categories. These are themes and patterns that recur in many folk tales around the world, not just in Russian tales, although these are characteristic in them. Here's a link to a page describing the book, as well as a link to purchasing the book. This book provides excellent conceptual resources for folktale construction.

National Storytelling Festival: this is a wonderful event that has been going on for decades; highly recommended if you can get there. East Tennessee State University which is nearby once had a Master's Degree in Storytelling or Folklore if I recall correctly.
