This is an amazing resource. Someone has kindly collected a load of storytelling videos off the WWW and put them in the Storylab. Note there are 20 pages so take your time and infuse

And living beings remain in cyclic existence,
For that long, may I too remain,

A good story with good magic, throw in some humor and it doesn't get any better.

This next one is a 45 minute lecture on Storytelling Theory and Practice. I really got a lot out of it, the Professor has similar thoughts to myself. He tells 3 great stories throughout.

Thanks for posting this. Lots of useful ideas in there. Plus I'd never heard that stonecutter story before - very nice.

I’m no being humble here, sorry, but my book has been a magic best seller for a few years and continues to sell. It covers all I know from 30 plus years in storytelling magic.

SilverTongue, this is a trove of helpful tips. Especially those of us, like myself, who are not natural story tellers.

Walt, I also have to express my appreciation for your book as well, which has proven to be an excellent source of inspiration.

Thanks for sharing this. Fell away from storytelling for awhile. This recharges my batteries.

Just found this thread, some really use full stuff there. Should keep me busy for a few nights.

I remember picture cards that magically tell stories by Guy Hollingsworth. Not sure of the author or spelling but it is worth looking into.

Thanks for all you do to perpetuate the art. Almost all my magic has a storytelling element, and you are one of the special places I go to so I can renew my joy in storytelling.

The link Walt supplied to his book doesn't work anymore. But here's a couple that do! I can't speak more highly of Tales of Enchantment!

Thank you for the mention! I am happy to say my “Tales of Enchantment: The Art of Magic” is and will continue to be in print. Now in its sixth year it is still a very strong seller. “Tales” is available from Penguin Magic or directly from me.

Magically, Walt

I want to contribute a great Storytelling game system called "Once Upon a Time" that are a bunch of cards with pictures and titles and you deal them out and take turns making stories with them. There are expansions that have more specialized categories as well. Here's a link to the pages on Boardgamegeek.com; lots of resources there.

A great exercise for these games and expansions would be to take a classic prop or something you want to tell a story about, deal out some random cards from the different categories, and make up a story about it that makes sense.

Here's another resource; I've been into storytelling since the early 1990s and have a pretty extensive library of storytelling resources. One of my favorites for actually building a story is a relatively unknown book by Vladimir Propp called "Morphology of the Folktale." He analyzed a huge number of Russian folk tales and identified patterns which he broke down into identifiable categories. These are themes and patterns that recur in many folk tales around the world, not just in Russian tales, although these are characteristic in them. Here's a link to a page describing the book, as well as a link to purchasing the book. This book provides excellent conceptual resources for folktale construction.

National Storytelling Festival: this is a wonderful event that has been going on for decades; highly recommended if you can get there. East Tennessee State University which is nearby once had a Master's Degree in Storytelling or Folklore if I recall correctly.
