Depends on the style. If you're handy with tools, a TT style is pretty simple. Under nail I've never tried.

A nail writer cost about $12.50 to purchase.
To make one, you need a sheet of brass, a metal scissors, a way to bend into shape, a method for retaining the lead, a mini vice of some sort to hold the metal while working on it, and a lot of trial and error. That is more then $12.50. |

There was a discussion here awhile back and the idea was using guitar finger or thumb picks, drill a hole and embedding a hollow rivet to hold the lead.

In my e-Book on "Mind Reading Puppets" from The Wizards' Journal #18, I have a section that Qua-Fiki and I collaborated on called "The Swami Knows All" and it shows several easy methods we have used to make nail-writers, thumb writers and Swami gimmicks for use with those effects. So you not only get a good variety of MR routines for use with puppets or Vent Figures, but also information on how to make some props that can work in a variety of different settings.
