I have a Kasner Lie Detector Helmet with smoker. I know Sterlini Magic also has another version.
I want to try making a better model with a buzzer, siren lights and a stronger smoke emitter. What would you include or improve on this effect? Or make it funnier?

By adding a mini-flash pot you could detect a “really bad” lie.
I’ve never used this specific item, but I did something years ago with a horn that would beep, quack like a duck, and finally make the sound of a toilet flushing. It was hilarious! Think “levels”!

I am thinking along the lines of The Price is Right's WOOP WOOP WOOOOOP sound.

How about the "Doink Doink" sound from "Law and Order"? It would open some doors for patter.

I have built something like that, an excitement detector, with a needle
take a look at the Floyd Bell web site, they have: nice pizo alarm selection matching pizo voice systems matching LED light indicators (red, yellow, green) the voice system is solid state, just apply 9 volts and it is talking at 95 db, this is amazing. They have 3 prerecorded messages but you can send them a recording for a $75 one time fee, and about $25 per unit thereafter, so that might only be practical for production situations. I also have a flash pot for when there is too much excitement, I suggest flash cotten NOT flash powder for handheld use... http://www.floydbell.com/ |

How about different colors of LED lights.
Green telling the truth Orange a small lie Red a whopper of a lie Led lights use very little power and last forever |

Then there's spring-loaded panels with wires and components attached, if they tell such a big one, it breaks the machine. Reloadable and re-usable, and can be triggered in conjunction with the smoke and flash powder. Hmm- could a camera flash be used for the flash instead of flash cotton/paper/powder? No smoke, but safe and reusable as well.

Let's see what materials I have right now:
4 channel remote to control 4 actions: negative buzzer, positive buzzer and smoke igniter using smoke powder. There is one more action available. Still thinking. A police siren light that is on the whole time and is an eye catcher. A stainless steel salad bowl as a helmet. I might change this to a lightweight helmet. A recordable voice alarm. I just need to look for a PVC housing case to fit in all the electronics and batteries. Yes, spring colored wires to add to the display.

How about at some point you ask a complex question like one of those math problems where a train starts in NY going west at 40mph...etc. and while they are sitting there trying to come up with an answer the Jeopardy theme plays.

Finally, I have completed my project. Siren sound and lights go on when a lie is told. Blue LED lights and giggling witch sound when truth is told. There are also 3 LED lights that continuously flash with a laser sound when a button is pushed for each question. Finally, smoke is produced when the machine overheats to too much lies.
I had to reduce sound of the siren sound because it was too ear piercing. I will use this for tomorrow's show. Headband is adjustable to fit kid and adult sizes. No need to hold on the handles but it looks funnier when they are. I decided to use a 2 channel remote instead of a 4 channel remote. It is concealed at the back of a jumbo playing card where questions are written on the face. BTW, that's my 2yr old son on the pic below. (the positive lights were not installed yet on that pic).

Do you think I should add some spiral wires that look like a spring to add to the electrical effect? I am thinking of adding 2 spring looking electrical wires that I can attach to the ears. Or just do the K.I.S.S. principle?

I think "outrageous" is the way to go with this one. Use big thick wires or even copper tubing, coiled like a moon shine still.
It looks great!

That lie detector looks amazing! It must have taken a lot of time to figure out all the wiring. I'm sure all of your hard work will pay off in many fun performances.
Great work Lou. Best Wishes, Rob |

Thanks for sharing your picture Rob. I am looking for those luminous plastic springs used in keychains.

I've never seen those luminous springs. Sounds interesting though. If you find a link, please post it.
