The illusion belongs to Robert-Houdin (the boy suspended by his hair), who was doing it in his theater with a totally different system (with a lot of bad angles).

The Copperfield version is an invention of french Magician MYKOG.

Christian Fechner saw him demonstrating in a magic convention in France. Then he show it to Copperfield, who like it a lot, and presents it in two of his TV shows.

You can find the details in the Fechner marvelous books on Robert-Houdin.

The guys at EDF magic made both of the units Copperfield used, one for a live tv special and one for the china special

I don't think that EDF made both units for Copperfield, since this company didn't exist when he shot the TV special "Walking through the Great Wall of China".
On the other hand one or a few guys from EDF worked in other illusion builder companies before, but I can't tell which.
