It's funny, there's a spot on Thayer St. outside the college bookshop where there was a nice double wide sidewalk. I thought that would be a great spot, but no one stopped. I walked two blocks up, outside a pizza place, the sidewalk was only the normal width, but suddenly people were stopping! (I think they did a study on that in Vegas. People were more likely to stop in smaller crowded casinos than they were in wide open spacious ones! Odd.)

Mandrake, THINK! Big area but in front of a COLLEGE BOOKSHOP. Textbooks are very expensive and college students are not known for having a lot of extra cash.

Small space in front of a Pizza shop. When going out to eat even students carry money. In these 2 cases it was not the size of the space that made the difference. It was the ability of the crowd to give a decent hat.

I still like turtles

Nicely thought out, but it wasn't the people coming in or out of either. It was the people walking by. In front of the bookshop, they kept walking in front of the pizza shop they stopped.

You're probably right, Bill. They're touchy about working in "door frames" here though. I was up against the wall at the book shop and they came out and told me I had to work from the curb. When I got to the pizza place, I didn't even try against the building, too much glass. I just worked from the curb. Seemed to work OK.

I meant that amount of distance, not actually working in a door frame.

Ah, being a "weekend warrior" I'm not up on the terms and what they mean.

John Sturk is a masterful street performer. I have seen him on many occasions and he has the gift. If he works in Chicago and you are around I guarantee you will hear about it

If I'm not mistaken, I saw John perform in front of Millennium Park 2 years ago... He's a card man, right?

No, Gaddy, that wasn't me.

I just moved to Chicago in November 2007 and haven't yet hit the street. Fortunately, I have a day job, so I get to pick and choose when to perform - like when it's not cold... Smile

Ah, OK- I wish I knew who that was, then... I saw like 1/2 the man's show, but was in such a hurry to get to my dinner reservations that I didn't have time to make casual small talk... I always felt bad about that, as I usually make time to get to know any magician I come across...

Yup, got my license, and I'm legal to go. The law says I can't be on Michigan Ave in front of Millennium Park, and along the Magnificent Mile.

I know it's getting a little cold to be busking in Chicago, but how places to VIEW other street magicians? There's gotta be some out there...

Y'know, I should have asked this before, but is there any real reason WHY you can't perform in front of Millennium Park or the Magnificent Mile?

I'm pretty sure the law was designed against the "street drummers" that were congregating in these areas. There were so many that the noise was constant and enormously irritating to the businesses and office workers in the area, so much so that a law was passed prohibiting them. To avoid any potential discrimination suits, all buskers were banned, which included the street drummers and everyone else to boot.

But that's just what I think, I could be wrong.
