I desperately need to know how to do this.

I want to film me talking to me.

So if I film me on the right hand side of the screen, then film me on the right hand side of the screen.

edit them together and I should appear to be talking to myself.

is it as easy as setting both layers to tranpareent ,.......say 50%

or how do I do this?

You're getting into what is known as compositing, something Vegas wasn't exactly designed for, unfortunately. To accomplish this, you'd be best to use a compositing application, like Shake, Nuke or Inferno. However, I'd also say it's not worth your while to purchase these if this is the only time you'll need to do this.

Depending on the length of the footage, I'd be willing to help out with this for you. I'm a VFX compositor (I use Shake) and editor, this is what I do for a living.
