HOW TO JOIN THE S.A.M.

The first step toward joining the Society of American Magicians is determining what kind of member you will be.

-----------> There are six categories <------------

Step 1: Find your membership category

ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: This is the most popular form of membership, since it
allows the member to participate in local Assembly functions, enjoy
camaraderie with fellow magicians, share knowledge, practice the magical
arts, and grow in its rich history. Application must be approved by the
Assembly and local dues may be required. To find out which Assembly is
nearest you Click here!

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: This form of membership is available to anyone who is
not able to affiliate with an Assembly. Assembly and Associate Members
receive a subscription to the S.A.M. magic magazine M-U-M.

JUNIOR ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: Certain S.A.M. Assemblies allow Junior Members to affiliate with their Assembly.

YOUNG MEMBERSHIP: This membership is available to young persons between the
ages of 7 and 17. Young Members may form their own S.Y.M. Assemblies
(Society of Young Magicians). They receive a membership pin and a monthly
publication written especially for young magicians, The Magic SYMbol.
S.Y.M. Assemblies have adult leaders who provide guidance, special programs, guest speakers and lectures, and magic instruction at Assembly meetings. The leaders receive their own newsletter, The S.Y.M. LeaderLetter, as an
excellent idea resource. Some S.A.M. Assemblies allow Young Members to participate in their activities as well.

CONTINGENCY MEMBERSHIP: This special class of membership is available to
individuals who live in the same household as a Member in good standing.
Contingency Members do not receive the M-U-M magazine because a subscription
is already assigned to the same address.

SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP: Any member from any of the previous categories can
become a Sustaining Member by making a contribution to the S.A.M. Endowment
Fund
in any amount above the regular Dues and Fees.

Step 2: Take the oath

"If accepted as a Member, I agree to do my best to elevate the Art of Magic
and to abide by the Constitution, By-laws, Code of Ethics and Ritual of the
Society of American Magicians.

I shall endeavor to cooperate with the Society in the promotion of its
objectives and to promote harmony among those interested in magic and to
advance the ethics of the profession.

I agree not to expose any modus operandi from stage, platform, television,
radio or in any manner whatsoever.

I am opposed to cheap literature wherein magical secrets are needlessly
exposed, or to the sale of professional magical effects in cheap miniature
form to the public.

I am opposed to needless and useless explanations of secrets to persons who
are not entitled to know them or who are not interested in magic.

I am opposed to placing any legitimate performer in a predicament while
that person is before an audience.
"

Step 3: Submit your application online, by mail, or in person

If you’d like to get started right away on applying for membership in the
S.A.M., click Here!

Local Assembly Member applicants, please bring a checkbook or cash to the
next Assembly meeting to meet the local dues requirements (usually about $15
per year).

To apply in person, please attend a meeting of your local Assembly. At that
time, bring two checks — one made out to the local assembly for local dues
(ask the membership chair of your assembly for the exact amount) and one
made out to the “S.A.M.” for national dues in the amount of $65 — along with completing
this application form.

The above dues include a one-time $15 Initiation Fee. In following years,
your dues will amount to $50 for national (which includes your subscription
to [url=http://www.magicsam.com/MUMonline.aspM-U-M[/url], plus local dues.

If there is no Assembly near you and you do not wish to apply online, you
may also mail in the above application form.
