I second Vinny:
Joel Bauer's Torn & Restored Newspaper is great, easy to perform and fast reset.
It's so easy to learn than you don't need to rewind the tape.

That is quite a statement. Sounds great.

Are any of the newspaper tears suitable for a walk-a-round venue done somewhat close-up?

NOt really. Why would you want to do a trick that requires set up and when done is thrown away? Maybe a torn/restored paper napkin or strip of tissue?

So, acknowledging that there are many good tear and restores out there, it seems that most agree that Gene Anderson's is among the best. So, my questions is, what is the least expensive way to learn this effect?

Also, are there any demo videos showing it being performed?

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel, the Gene Anderson DVD is fantastic.

I also bought the Baxt "Better tear".

The tear is less convincing though you could do the standard Anderson tear with the supplied gimmick.

What disappointed me about the Baxt offering was not the gimmick though it seems a bit heavy. The part I did not like was that the promo info about the DVD spoke of the "hilarious routine and copmlete patter included".

This could not be further from the truth. Not only is it not funny, I would not even call it patter. I honetly thought it was the explaination to the effect.

Note to magicians wanting to put their stuff on DVD:
If you're going to hype your DVD with lots of nifty marketing lingo... go for it!
BUT make sure what you hype it with is actually INCLUDED.

It's not meant as a demo video, but you can see Whit Haydn perform Gene Anderson's version at the Magic Castle here

The least expensive way to learn is buy the Anderson book. It's all there.

It doesn't look nearly as nice as the Anderson tear.
Still looks magical tho.

I think the audible "tearing" of the paper and the open display of the inside of the paper is really missing here.

Gene Anderson is the king of newspaper tears. no question.

Frank,
I didn't realize that. I bought mine directly from Robert Batx at a lecture he did.
His routine was really funny at his lecture. I have never read the hype about it.
I have been seeing more and more of false hype.
I really do like the gimmick though. Easy to use.

master Comedy Magician Robert baxt and Hocus Pocus have joined forces to release for the first time, direct from Robert's astounding comedy act, his Torn & Restored Newspaper routine!

You receive the specially designed gimmick, a Performance & Instruction DVD that includes Robert’s method, hilarious routine, and complete patter.

If anyone at all thinks the presentation on the DVD was hilarious, or even funny, I'll have my post deleted. I bought the item for the comedy routine to see a comedy approach to the effect, as well as the gimmick. I just got the gimmick.
