Oh OK, I was thinking that it was being presented as a puzzle or something like that. Where I got that idea I have no clue. Maybe the "puzzle me this" thing threw me off.

The one in the picture is a replica, apparently the original that the artist saw was broken. That why he replicated it with a clear slide over the letters. that's what threw me, normally all of the letters would not be visible all the time. Apparently, these were fairly popular in Europe, I wonder if shops here in the States ever used them? Maybe they were too confusing for Americans like myself, so we just stick to the types of signs that get flipped over front to back.

I believe the "down" marker in American Football uses the same or a similar principle to display 1, 2, 3 or 4. Something to watch for next fall.
