According to copyright law, the copyright comes into effect the moment the work exists in any tangible form (readable by human or machine).

If you expect to have a good chance of defending the copyright in some future legal dispute, however, you should register it with the U.S. Copyright Office (assuming you're in the U.S.; other countries have similar procedures). To register a work, you need to submit a completed application form, a non-refundable filing fee of $30, and a non-returnable copy or copies of the work to be registered. Understand, however, that copyright only protects the expression of an idea; it explicitly does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation. For these, you need to consider patent protection, a much more complex (and expensive) proposition.
