Hi there, I wanted to get some info on what people thought were the popular tricks or routines from the 50's, 60's,70's,80's and 90's. I want to know what is very recognizable from each of these times. Thanks Brian Cook

The Elliott books are not a good reflection of this. They are too limited.
Your best bet would be to purchase or borrow the CD-ROM of the Linking Ring and read a sampling of the Ring Reports in several issues from various years. Or read the convention reports. This would tell you a lot.

When I got into magic as a kid in the 80's everyone was crazy about the self folding bill...that crazy bill, It drove me nuts trying to work it out.
'though it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way...it would seem that we are all negligent.

In the 1960's one of the hottest items was the coin penetration through a piece of dental dam secured with a rubber band around a glass.
I'm not sure, but I think it was late 50's or early 60's when Gene Gordon began selling (by arrangement with the originator) the ever-popular PROFESSOR'S NIGHTMARE. |

Back in the 70's the joke that was going around was that every kid in New York City owned a chop cup, a Zombie and a Zig Zag.

One of the best selling tricks of the '70's was Steve Duscheck's Wonder Bar.
Just after moving into his new home in Hazelton, PA, Steve told me it was "the house that Wonder Bar built." A very popular stage trick of that era the Zombie. And, oh yeah, every kid was doing wonders with a Fantasio cane. Ed Hutchison |
