Profile of Special this week...
As you probably know, world-class magician Roger Klause passed away last year, leaving behind an entire community of magicians mourning his leaving us. During his final year, he dealt with cancer bravely and with grace while maintaining his role as the consummate magician and, as Michael Skinner once called him, "the Leader of the Underground."

As some of us were talking about what could be done for Roger and his wife Wanda, Curtis Kam suggested putting together a DVD collection of effects by Roger's friends to honor him.

In March 2008, an entire convention was moved from its regular location to Borger, Texas - Roger's home town -- so Roger could be with his friends and enjoy the get-together. Magicians came from all over the country, and many of them contributed material to this project.

These contributions now make up "Friends of Roger Klause - Volume 1," a tribute to Roger. Over 90 minutes, this DVD contains performances and explanations of some pet effects and moves of Roger's friends. You will find:

  • Bob White - A personalized handling of "The Fingerprint Card Trick."
  • Ricky Smith - "A Layman Fooler" -- the secret transfer of a card from full palm in one hand to full palm in the other.
  • Brad Henderson - "Separating the Men from the Boys," a highly finessed handling of the Alex Elmsley effect.
  • Richard Hatch - "The Mystery of the Jadoo Wallah," perhaps the best handling of the Gypsy thread ever!
  • Brian O'Neill - A very clever and baffling dice routine...the dice move hand to hand and then completely vanish altogether!
  • Mark Tams - The fast, surprising and baffling production of four of a kind from a truly shuffled deck.
  • Earl South - A commercial approach to the "Ring on String" effect.
  • Steve Lancaster - Steve's Coins Across (performance only).
  • Dan Strange - "Push Me Pull You" -- A nifty and entertaining way to produce two cards.
  • Mike Squires - "The Flip-Up Palm" -- a very deceptive palm of the top card.
  • Jordan Burgess - "A Mix and a Reveal," a small packet Triumph that will fool all your friends, and "Reset," an extension of the basic plot that cleans everything up for you!
  • Jared Kopf - "An Open Display of Triumph," Jared's great method for the Triumph effect that was printed in Genii Magazine.

After we collected this footage, we added more material -- enough for a second volume! On Volume 2, which is approximately 112 minutes,
Lance Pierce
personally performs and explains several unpublished ideas of Roger's as well as some Roger-inspired routines and effects. Here, you'll find:

  • Color-Changing Silks - The never-before published handling that's different than any you've seen. This is the handling that inspired Roger's "Red & White" (as published in his book Roger Klause: In Concert), and it's a fooler!
  • Soleil et Lune - Roger's fantastic handling for the Sun and Moon effect, a baffling and magical transposition of two coins.
  • Full Circle - A clear and direct routine using the $100 Bill Change - you walk up AND leave empty handed, leaving the audience shaking their heads.
  • The Lilliput Palm - One of the most deceptive palms ever, almost completely overlooked by magicians!
  • Roger's Laydown - A simple and beautiful idea to secretly add cards to any packet arrangement.
  • Roger's Turnover - A wonderful piece of artistic card finesse that will clean up many routines.
  • Where's Merlin? - A very clean approach to Merlin's Lost Aces with no bottom deals or double deals!
  • Roger's Favorite Oil and Water - What Roger considered the best Oil and Water routine he'd ever seen.

Every routine is explained to the utmost detail, and in addition, Volume 2 contains vintage footage of Roger when but a young student of magic performing classic routines, as well as a 1982 live performance of Roger entertaining the crowd at a private party.

Each volume is $35, but on
Lance Pierce's website, you can purchase the set of two for only $65! The special thing about these DVDs is that all proceeds go directly to Wanda Klause, Roger's wife of 50 years.

So, thanks for your time, thanks for your interest, and thanks for your support. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to drop Lance Pierce a note at: lance@lancepierce.com
