Does anyone know what the title of the book is that discusses the making of the gimmick for the egg on fan (egg in glass). The wellington eggs seem impossible to get anymore and I really love using the trick. I know there is a book that tells how to make the organic gimmicks, but I don't know the title. Thanks.

First it is a Weller egg. There is a guy name Dan Ford who is making good ones. I think if you do a search here you will find the method of making duck's eggs into the skin for the effect.

The method is no secret but it is very time consuming. It's just as easy to make many at once. But it really isn't worth it since there are dealers that have them for sale. As an old Weller Egg user, I can assure you that you don't want the real thing if you can find a latex substitute. The real ones have very limited life and require maintenance. Unless you can afford to trash one every two weeks (and working magicians can) the real thing is too much trouble. Duck eggs are also seasonal. Why bother?

Hi, John Carney's "Book of Secrets" has the procedure for making your own egg. I found the procedure easy to do. I have a latex egg and find it opens to quickly.(almost immediately)The real egg opens at the speed I like.
The "Book of Secrets" is a good book to get and read through often. Craig

Accolombel,
I had forgotten that Carney included this in "Book of Secrets." A fantastic book, if any of you have access to it, I highly recomend buying a copy.

Thanks for the answers folks. I prefer the latex eggs, but it is starting to look like no one is making them anymore. I will try looking up Dan Ford and hope he is still creating them. I appreciate all the answers and will probably try all of them lol.

I have used the Weller egg and loved it. But as they were getting hard to find I switched to the real egg. Didn't have any luck until Carney's book came out. Great advice. I love using the real egg.
Has anyone tried corn starch instead of talcum powder? I hate the smell!!!! Shaun

A problem with corn starch is that it attracts insects.
(There are also some very serious health concerns about talc.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I hope to be NOT using insects in my act so that should NOT be a problem.
So besides the insects is there an advantage to using corn starch. Instead of talc? Sorry Bob but your post didn't really help much... Shaun

There are new vacuum canisters at the supermarket where you can pull the air out of a plastic container in which you keep your cornstarch powder. End of insect problem.

I've always loved this trick.
I first learned about it in a book I bought as a kid back in 1976. The book is called "Blackstones Secrets of Magic" by Harry Blackstone. My copy, which I still have, is a paperback published in 1975, a new revised edition published by Melvin Powers Wilshire Book Company. originally published in hardcover in 1958. I purchased my copy in an ordinary book store before I new of any magic shops and I read that book to death. Lots of great tricks but the Egg on fan has always been a favorite and I still perform it. The instructions to make your own the "organic" way is in this book. I think making the gimmick myself and discovering the diabolical nature of the whole thing made it even more interesting to me. I've never purchased a man-made gimmick for this efect. I've never even seen one. Don't need to. It may be better and more convenient. I like the old way. There is a hardcover version right now selling for $3.99 at abebooks http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchRe......=62&y=16 good luck, Stephen Stephen |
