Just in this moment the sad news reached me...Borodin passed away

He is one of my mentalism heroes...
...and was a very friendly person

Peace to you Borodin!
Farewell...
Believe me...nothing is trivial...

I just learned of this a few minutes ago. Ulf Bolling, known to magicians in the German-speaking world and the English-speaking world as Borodin, was my spiritual brother. He, Ted Lesley and I called ourselves Die Geschwister Punx, which is German for "The Punx Kids," because all three of us had been very strongly influenced by Punx. I'm the only one left.

Ironically, I had the feeling that he would not survive to his next birthday which is the day after tomorrow. He had been extremely ill with metastatic liver cancer. He told me about this 4 years ago. He said that his doctor had given him the choice of taking chemotherapy, being miserable for 2 years and maybe living for two more years and simply taking painkillers when the pain got to be too much.

He chose the latter.

For the past 9 months he had drifted in and out of sleep.

As I write this, I am in Zell am See, Austria. I sent him a birthday card Monday explaining that we would not be able to attend his birthday celebration this year, because we knew how rough it would be on him, and that he needed his rest.

Now he has come to his final rest. He will be buried in Bamberg.

He kept writing new material until last year.

What a guy!

Ulf Bolling - Borodin will be buried in Bamberg, Germany, June 2, 2010. He picked out his burial plot long before he learned that he had cancer. Bamberg was his home for many years.

Update. Ulf's funeral will be in Bayreuth, on June 2. This is the location of the famous Wagner opera house.

Yet another update.

On June 28, 2010, I performed a Broken Wand Service for Borodin at the monthly meeting of IBM Ring 39. Ulf had been a member of the IBM, The PEA and the MZv.D, so we felt this was the most fitting place for such a ceremony.

My friend, Eugene Protas, recorded the ceremony and has put a video of it on YouTube. Between my mumbling and the bad acoustics of the room, I do not sound very clear. However, if you wish to view this, you can find it at:

Ulf also had a web page, http://www.ulfbolling-borodin.com , which is now a memorial web site.
