I've used magic to illustrate points or to hold the attention of the congregation in church with no complaints of it having been inappropriate. However, magic has been deemed as inappropriate at work.
I have a "real" job and, although my company has hired other magicians and have asked me to perform at various company functions, I found that using magic in a conference room to both break the monotony AND to illustrate a point was not well-received. I was looked at as childish, (by people younger than me, even), and unprofessional. Even worse than those who thought it so inappropriate as to miss my entire point, were those who just stared at me blankly. ...Blinking and completely silent. Not in awe and wonder at the illusion or at my point of business. ...Just basically being bored, breathing furniture! So, I've concluded that from the pulpit in church, it's okay. At a conference table during a bored...er, I mean, "board" meeting - not okay. At least not for my company. They apparently only want me to do magic at specified times and for reasons they deem worthy and not for my own presentations while on company time and property. |

Funny you mention funerals. It makes the point that not all can be painted with a broad brush. Here is what I mean. I WORKED ONE.
I was just starting and the family had a ton of kids. They didn't want them running arround so I was hired to keep them busy. It was early in my career when I did kids magic. (as a matter of fact it fell in a 4 week period in which I did kids magic). I was paid very well as it worked out. I did 25 minute shows and did them about every hour. The kids got rotated through, nobody hired a baby sitter and it went relativly well. BUT AS A RULE it is a bad idea to do magic at a funeral. BUt also let me say that I see guys doing magic at inappropriate places all the time. Most of which havn't been mentioned. How about the loby of a Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants show? Yep saw it done. How about when another magician is doing table magic and you decide to run through your scales with the cards? Nope not appropriate. Happened once a week at Schuliens. How about just foisting magic on unsuspecting people? Or my favorite, people who want to do comedy and card tricks for the gal at WalMart, usually when I am in a hurry behind them. The guys who want to change the singles into 20's because they just bought the trick. Yea safe to say I have seen LOTS of places where you just shouldn't be doing magic. How about doing magic when your paid or asked? Seems pretty simple really.

I would think that one place you wouldn't want to perform your stuff is when someone else is performing. But that's just bad form.......
Places not to perform magic On a ship that's sinking.... At a Quaker colony......... Salem, Mass.....circa 1600... During a baptism or circumcison (although.......nevermind)

Never perform magic in a library? They get cranky
Charlie,
A Magician with Good Taste. Only perform an illusion once. The first time is magical, the second is an education. |

You can also lock yourself in a glass bowl and hold your breath as long as you can. That always gathers a crowd.

Years ago I worked as a teller in a small casino in Carson City, NV.
My shift was from 10pm to 3am, not a lot of action and I was bored most of the time. One night I decided to tease the overhead camera by picking up a $100 chip from my till and vanishing it with a retention vanish. I then VERY CLEARLY caused the chip to reappear! I was asked by security to never do that again.

Times not to magic:
If you're a doctor performing a triple bypass and you decide to do a sponge ball routine. When the cops pull you over for drunk driving (dont ask..) When you're meant to be performing intimately with your significant other and you feel the need to do a david Copperfield dance routine... |

Good points, everyone. I'd add that doing magic during another magician's routine -- like at your local club -- is rude.
