Acquired an old forbes ring flight but the thread continually breaks. I assume it's just old thread (or a weak choice). Does anyone personal experience with a good source for thread? I was thinking kevlar would allow strength without being overly visible. Feel free to just link to past threads (pun intended) as I tried to search but came up short

Ring Flights do no use floating thread. They use nylon monofilament fishing line, clear. To be on the safe side get 25 lb. test strength line.

It is never visible as the ling runs along under your arm. They should only see it if they are lying on the floor.

Time to invest in Dave Bonsall's Ring Flight Revolution. The line is guaranteed not to break. And if it does, Dave will fix it for you free of charge.

Get it here:

It is expensive. No denying. But if you are a working pro, who does a lot of shows, it is well worth the investment.

I second Bill's suggestion about getting a 25 pound strength fishing line. It might be a good idea to get a tech to change the line since it will require dismantling the prop. Old magic props with moving parts can be tricky to work with.

I had Jim Riser do restoration work on an old Swink ring flight I purchased two years ago.

Bill: lol looks like the dust has settled. thank you for the tip, I'm shopping for 25lb+ fishing line

Tally: The forbes is gorgeous, I feel obliged to do at least a dozen shows with this thing. But thanks for reminding me about Dave; revolution is much less suspect than a large key case, and that warranty is nice

Leo: I've already dismantled it once to retie the hook, and yes even a pediatric neurosurgeon wouldn't touch this thing. If I fail this time, I'll take your advice and contact a specialist

Damen--I'm amazed that you even located a Forbes ring flight. I gave up trying to find one of those a long time ago. It can be frustrating to find an old sought after prop only to realize that it needs work.

RFR looks like the way to go these days for this effect.

Ddamen, Walmart has the clear leader line for less then $2.00, they also carry spools for a few dollars more.

I would probably go to a fabric store and ask them for monofilament threads. They usually have a great selection, and since it's not a "magic product" by their minds, it is not usually very expensive.

Just saying I third the rfr. It's a great product. I was 3 months over my warranty and he still fixed it free of charge. Best customer service I have ever had from a store

Spoken like someone that has no experience with reels. sewing thread is to weak, and will break the 1st time it is used. A fabric clerk would not know what your talking about, monofilament is a term used with fishing line. Invisible Thread is a term used in the fabric industry.

I just repaired a reel for a Café member, the person he got it from thought that he could use invisible magic thread in a reel. Thus he messed up the reel, and the broken thread was still attached.

Springs in reels are to strong for Invisible thread or any sewing thread.

Fabric and craft stores most certainly do sell monofilament line. It's used for stringing beads and similar projects.

Thank you everyone. Yes Leo, this was not easy to find. Been using Forbes Portfolio for quite a while so I knew the craftsmanship would be top notch

Anyways I ended up buying Seaguar Fluorocarbon filament 30+ lbs line off amazon. However it continually shredded and I literally replaced it over a dozen times since starting this thread. Something sharp internally is damaging the line but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. I want to send this to someone who has the skill to fix this, but also the ethics not to copy the design and start some fleet of Chinese counterfeits. I emailed Jim and keep praying to the rain gods Lassen will get time to call me back

How about using kevlar thread in the reel instead of fishing line? I bet that would stand up to use better.

Thanks for the tip. I have not found any source for clear 25+ lb kevlar thread. They are always in conspicuous colors.

It also feels like putting bandaid on a deep laceration. A 30+lb line should not be cut within a few uses. There's something very off

I mentioned what is the best to use. Walmart sells a huge spool for $3 dollars. Nothing inside a real should cut or wear the line. Don't know what Flurocarbon means, but it most likely the cause of your line breaking.

Maybe you have it to tight slamming against the housing, install a rubber bumper or back off some of the tension.
