Michael Ammar used to sell a Swedish reel that worked well for that effect. Strong and quiet.

The Ammar version is great, but you have to check his site frequently because the reels are often out of stock; I got it for the silk through object like he performed on the David Letterman show. I also purchased (for a different purpose) a super nice close-up reel which is very quiet from James Riser . He had just finished a new batch a while ago so he may have one or two available still.

Doesn't Tarbell teach a reel(less) version?

I have to warm up this thread again because I am looking for a reel for the same effect. the swedish reel is about 150€ so it is a little too expensive for me right now, especially just for one effect. I've heard good things about the alpha reel by james george. but I don't know if it is suitable for this kind of effect.

The Alpha reel will not work for this effect. The Alpha is good for IT effects only.

Get a Kirkendall reel.
It works like a charm. |
