I should know these, but I can't remember them. I am trying to recall the names of two variations of the Hot Rod. In one you perform a routine, then transform the Hot Rod into a ball with gems. You squash the ball flat into a disc with gems.

The other is a metal version of the trick, with a vaguely Celtic pattern on the sides. It was call something like Varium Rod, I believe.

Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks!

Hi,

The first one was a product of Johnson Products. It was called Gem Busters.

???? on the other one.

Enjoy the search.

I believe Gem Busters was a neat plastic set, but NOT put out by Johnson Products.

Johnson does have a somewhat similar effect, sans hot-rod, called The Mint.

I was just reading about The Mint at Johnson's site, and they mentioned that it was modeled consciously after Gem Busters. Recognized the name and immediately came here to post. Thanks!

Okay, the other is the Varillium Hot Rod. Wish I knew where I lost mine.

I have one of these and it is just about my favorite "straight" model. It has such a nice heft to it.

To the best of my knowledge it's no longer being produced. Should anyone find a dealer with some stock, I would purchase a back-up...

The Varillium Hot Rod was produced by Sterling Magic back in the 90's. My set is of two, one light blue and one amber on the other sides. Man, I am so glad these were found! Smile

What exactly is Varillium? Just a name? Mine must be pewter, cause it has a small nick on one edge. I have a matching okito box that some kid dropped on me, and put a nick in it as well. Those dings can give away the methods.

Wait until they drop your Scotch & Soda!

I have lost my single plastic paddle that had 3 clear gems on one side with 1 red gem.The other side
was the same but location of red gem was in a different place. It`s a cheap trick, but very handy only carrying around 1 paddle & can be examined.
Does anyone know where I can get another? This one was given to me & I don`t have the source.

Of all the paddle type tricks, I still like the brass rod with the holes that have the small
pieces of wood that jump from hole to hole. When given out the holes are not holes at all(healed).

Have fun,
John

Hi John

I really like that paddle effect with the kicker finish, too.

The "original" Porper Jumping Peg Paddle (not sure if that's the correct name) made in wood is the absolute best of this type of paddle. IMO the metal ones, even those he makes now, look a little suspicious to the spectator.

Occasionally the vintage wooden ones pop-up on the Big Auction...

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

And in Brass (ungimmicked):

I can vouch for these people. Fast shipping! Very good site for magic. Check out the main page:
