I was wondering if you could suggest tricks that deal with language barriers. I would assume visual stuff like a coin matrix.
-A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.
-It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them.
-The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything.

See you space cowboy...

I think that Jay Sankey has a DVD that he put out a while ago dealing with this idea. Somebody here I am sure knows the name... I just can't remember it. Was it "45" or something like that?

There are a lot of visual effect out there. For example, you might want to check out the Cultural Xchange DVD which contains magic that's designed to be visual and that doesn't require patter so that the effects can be performed in loud environments.

I was wondering if something with coins and different currency from various countries could tie in nicely with a routine that may not have to be spoken so much. Maybe the idea of the currency changing into something else could spark an idea of this sultural exchange idea.

Over the years I have had several situations where the show was not in English. I'm from Alabama and ranch raised so I barely speak that! I do have a college minor in Spanish and can get by in Latin America. I have also been in the import business since 1969. Now that is mostly in Asia and ASEAN group. I was on the corporate board of directors in Norway and Sweden in the 80s. Reality is that I have had some business exposure. But I never use it on stage!

In those circumstances, I do a routine with music only. That also means lots of silks, doves, appearances, vanishes and transpositions that require NO explanation. They are strictly visual. I go with large, colorful, flashy, and surprising.

For over four decades, it has worked every time.

I’m sticking with it!

I remember doing a show for a bus load of guests at City Hall in a town near me. All I knew about the audience was they were 50 teenage girls who clapped for my tricks, and forced polite laughter for all my jokes, so I thought it was the worst show of my life then I found out they only spoke Swedish when they came up to thank me.
