Just a tip: Have the chrome sand blasted off of the key, and then soak it in sea water for 3 days. This will rust it and make it look very old. Smile

I rarely used the Haunted Key until a little while ago. When I first bought mine, I was really unimpressed with it and the suggested patter that goes along with the routine. How could you use the "old key I found in a haunted house" patter when the key that is supplied is all shiny and new looking?

However, just recently I was at my mom's house and realized that all the doors have the skeleton key locks on them since the house was built in the early 1900's. I figured there had to be a key somewhere and I found one that was in the door to my old bedroom. I took the key out and played with it and it worked. The only thing is that it is not evenly balanced and falls over quickly but it does start its motion slowly. And there is true patter that I can use with this. My great grandfather died in that room as it was his bedroom long before it was mine, and there have been a couple of unexplained occurances in there when I was small. What do you guys think? Plus I like this key. It is not as bulky and is really old and looks old. Do you think this story would work?

Sounds great!

The only thing wrong with Dick Williams' handling of the key is that he takes too long with it. He is of the old school that believes that it should take 20 minutes for the key to turn over. Maybe you can do that on television, but you can't do that in most other performing venues.

I remember watching a DVD by Carlyle and he recommended buying a key from him that is balanced. What do you guys think... is a 'balanced' key better?

If you make the key take forever to turn over, you are going to loose interest from your audience. They key that I found at my mom's house is not evenly balanced, but it does start its motion slowly and then falls over quickly. This is actually more powerful I think because if they are not expecting it, it will give them quite a start. I have had people jump when I perform this and I ALWAYS carry it with me.

Boys, I found an old key when I moved all my grandmothers stuff from her house about 20 years ago. It works perfect for the effect. It's large and has a nice long shaft and looks like one of those old jail keys you see hanging on the big ring in an old cowboy movie. It has the perfect patina of rust on it. This is one of my favorite effects and I've never seen a better key for it. If I get a burst of memory tomorrow I'll shoot a pic of it and post it. In fact, I wish everyone would do the same. I'd love to see the assortment of keys that yall use for this old gem. It's a lot of fun.

Keep em turning!!!

I find it funny that we all seem to spend so much time and money trying to find a suitable key that will work. I've searched through antique stores (not recomended) and come up with nothing. There are several mortice keys that look about right, but the balance is all wrong and don't work as well as the newer key.

I think the trick is just to get all that shiny chrome off of the key. Tired painting it, tried putting a candle flame to it and sealing it, but it eventually wears out. I'm going to try Dpe666's idea of sand-blasting the stupid thing and soaking it in sea water. I also have a lot of alkali dust that might work just as well to help with the aging process. Thanks for the tip!

I also use it on occasion for some pendulum effects for fun too. A lucky find!

Wow...Tabman, that is the perfect looking Key. Wish someone would start manufacturing keys like this for the magic marketplace.

I've been studying trying to figger out how to cast a few of them. It really is the perfect key and I found it in a drawer full of old keys when I moved my grandmother's stuff out of her house which had been sitting there since 1797. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. It had haunted key written all over it. I talked to a casting company a few years ago and they quoted me some rediculous price just to set it up. I'm learning how to sand cast so maybe I can make a few of them. Maybe this old dog can still learn a few more tricks.

Tabman,
If you make up some of these keys, please let me know as I will definitely order several from you. There should be casting companies in the marketplace today willing to do it for a reasonable price...especially in light of all the recent competition coming from China.

OK, thanks A.J., maybe it's time to look into it again. I'll try to do it this week.

Keep spinning!!!

Count me in too. I'd love to get a hold of one of those keys.

Even if you get a rough cast, with a little filing and finishing, you could have a nice new "antique" key.

Sounds like you may have the start of a nice little business. "Haunted Key inc." or something. Smile

That's good Khopri!!! That will make going to family reunions a lot better now. Instead of telling them that I make magic tables and wands for a living I can tell them that I'm now in the haunted key business!!! Smile

I will see what I can do about getting a few cast. I don't even know what the original is made of. Iron I would imagine. I'll keep yall posted.
