I don't know about the stand, but one of the professional Magicians in our club uses an aluminum case that used to hold poker chips.

This is a really good DVD set that teaches you how to make the exact set-up you referenced. I made 2 of these as well as another table. Great tips on performing and organizing your show as well. There is also some live performance video shot.

The material cost was approx. $45.00 for the set up.

I hate the idea personally. I don't want to keep having to lift a lid to get at things or put things away.

For me I use the case and a V shaped stand to hold it. Cheaper not by much though.

Then you can rest any case or box on top of it.

Our Home Depot sells the case for $21 - cheaper than at Sears. I used a larger flange than the Penguin instructions called for. The table is much more stable.

I don't like tables with the center pole connection, what I use is a tray Jack (the thing waiters put trays of food on) which has the advantage of being more stable and a lot less expensive http://www.eshophere.com/traystands/traystands.html

I use it because it opens at the top. I don't need table space, but if I did, I'd just pull a small homemade tray out of the case and put it on top. I just set the case on a barstool to have it at the right height. Barstools are cheap, anyway. Why spend more than you have to and have an unsightly stand on stage?

I used to use a case that is sold at camera stores. It was a great case, looked really good but too good. I had my car broken into just to get that case..they thought they were getting camera equipment..imagine when they saw sponge balls, ropes,etc. I laugh about it now but wasn't happy when it happened many years ago.

There is a wide range of pricing in aluminum cases. The ones at Home Depot are very cheap, in both senses of the word. The aluminum surface is very thin and has a tendency to dent easily.

I purchased a similar case from Ritz Camera. It cost about 4 times what the cheap one did. It has a much thicker surface and does not dent easily.

Just because the aluminum case of the one available in the UK looks similar to the one you get at Home Depot does not mean that it is the same case.

This said, I would not like to use one of those folding drum stands for a table column. They are not very stable, and they look amateurish. Get a decent looking roll-on table.

As a drummer I must say that there are some VERY sturdy stands out there. Having spent the past 18 years hitting cymbals with sticks I can tell you that the sturdiness of a well made folding drum stand is difficult to beat. Granted that doesn't mean it looks any better, but I suppose that all depends on what each performer is going for.

The advantage of a catalog case over a brief case is that once your show is packed, it will stay put. You don't have to worry about everything being turned over
