Here is my gripe....oh wait....brb
And that is my gripe. why is it that people use these "lazy terms"? You are in no rush to post. I use a few in my chats, but in a forum post I see no reson to be so lazy that you cannot type: in my opinion. Does anyone have a just reason? Jakks Ooh, that sounds harsh......this was supposed to be a light hearted, but gripey post.... Jakks |

It took me a while before I caught on to some of the abreviations that were not self explanatory within the context of the post.
Every once in a while I see one I haven't come across yet. BTW, IMHO, we should try to get out of this habit. |

Actually - how established are these abbreviations? It was only a few years ago that I learned some of them and I'm a little hesitant to use them with normal people (e.g e-mail... I wouldn't use them during conversations). Are any of them mere products of chat boards, or perhaps even magic boards? (Except for the obviously magic ones like TT, IT etc).

Well, my pet peeve is IMO or IMHO.....I cannot STAND IT! I feel about it as Eugene Burger feels about the word "patter."
I only use LOL and BRB in chat conversation (because many people who are chatting with me are incredibly impatient). Jakks |

Well, I believe people are just lazy. I'm lazy, too. I do it all the time. It's just easier. But if it's someone I don't know, I'll try typing things out for the reason the people above have mentioned. Not all internet slang is widely known.

I don't tend to use such abbreviations, so I'm often bemused by them, too.

I tend not to use acronyms, since a lot of people (usually older crowds, since the young techie ones get it) don't understand the terms.
I did read a little while back where teachers are bemoaning the fact that with today's instant messaging (IM for the techies), students are mispelling words at a greater rate than before and using IM words in place of their correct counterparts. Interestingly enough, the comments on that story, which was posted on a technical site, sided with the teachers, saying that in order to communicate well, one must learn how to spell and write correctly.... Oh well, every generation will find something wrong with the next generation. |

Now I know why no one answers me back. I always thought they meant the following:
LOL --- left-over lobster ASAP --- Aliens Seeking Another Probe BTW --- Bob's Throwing Watermelons FAQ --- Frequently Asked Quails IMHO -- I Might Have Oysters BRB --- Bad Raisin Bran Wow, was I off! Greg

In case anyone missed this, these kinds of abbreviations are not allowed in the main forums. A lot of our international members (and for that matter, our U.S. members) don't know what these things stand for, making them a hindrance to communication.

If there is no communication then everything would be FUBAR!
PM me....for that if you don't know. |

Regarding FUBAR, I have to ask:
Was it an established expression even before the "Tango & Cash" movie? Second, is it perhaps really a contortion of the hacker "default word" foo-bar? (A word given as an example when they can't find any other word instead). |

Tango & Cash was the first time I became aware of the term FUBAR.

FUBAR, like SNAFU, goes back to World War II; both are acronyms used by the troops.
If you want an explanation, PM me (I'm sure not going to do it here!) |
