I'll leave this one up in the form of a quiz...without looking it up, anyone know the next-to-last line of the old All in the Family theme "Those Were the Days"?

Michael,

I can sing the Flintstones theme all the way through, which line gives people trouble?

How about the lyrics to "Louie, Louie". Never could understand half of what they were singing.

That's in print. Check with google. Iggy Pop did a good take on that song live.

Not a song lyric. But the title of Malachy McCourts book "A Monk Swimming" came from his mishearing the St Marys Prayer as a child.

For years he thought the line "blessed art thou amongst women" was "Blessed art thou, a monk swimming".

Gee our old Lasalle ran great.

I learned that years ago, but until I did, I never knew what he was saying.

Speaking of CCR and not meaning to offend anyone (but here goes)...

I still don't know what he's saying in "Down on the corner" this is what I hear: "Down on the corner, out in the street, Willy and the poor boys are playing bringing negros happy feet" ???
Someone help me out here, please.

Can't remember which, and I'm too lazy to look, but it's either:

Bring your nickels, tap your feet

or

Bring your nickel, stamp your feet.

Anyway, the gist is, you're supposed to really get into Willie & the Poorboys, and dance around a bit, and even tip them, but not too much.

Creedence Clearwater fan?

cited from above:

"Early in the evenin’ just about supper time,
Over by the courthouse they’re starting to unwind.
Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up.
Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp.

Chorus:
Down on the corner, out in the street,
Willy and the poorboys are playin’;
Bring a nickel; tap your feet."

It used to drive me nuts when I'd get an album or tape and it didn't include the lyrics. Espically Bob Dylans stuff. I eventually became very good at deciphering song lyrics. And became expert in "Dylan-Speak". There were lines that I listened to for YEARS before I ever "heard" them.

Vandy

The "uphill climb" in the "Gilligans Island" song from the closing credits vexed me for years.

People always got the line from Manfred Mann/Springsteen's "Blinded by the light-Revved up like a duece" wrong.

I also could never figure out what was said on the B-52's "Love Shack" until years ago when someone told me it was "Tin roof, rusted".

I remeber a DJ years ago playing "blinded by the light" and commenting on the open mic, "did he just say Douche?" You could hear the laughter from behind hime in the studio.

Does anyone else here, old enough to remember music of the late sixties, remember the opening line from a Bobby Sherman song "I'm taking a shave, out under the sun"? For years we thought he was singing about taking a something else.

There is a name for these mis-heard lyrics. They are called "Mondegreens." It came from people who mis-sang the line from "Lord Randall" that went:

They took Lord Randall and laid him on the green.

as

They took Lord Randall and Lady Mondegreen.

I worked in a band for many years. One of the reasons I quit was "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree."

It often happened that some well-intentioned, blue-haired little old lady or some drunk would request that we sing that song "For the boys coming home from Vietnam."

I would refuse. I had been in the Army during that conflict, and I refused to sing that song for the returning soldiers. I would explain it this way: The song says "I'm coming home, I've done my time." Criminals do time. Soldiers and P.O.W.'s don't.

I figured if I couldn't bring myself to sing that song for some little old lady who didn't know any better, I should quit performing music. I was right. Now, if some little old lady wants to hear that song, I tell her to take a card. Smile

Was it Credence that sang "there is a bath room on the right", or was it a "there is a bad moon on the right"
