Dang, I thought you were going to end this with "Priceless."
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

If time is money being a good magician costs more than being bad one, or does it?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

To actually be a good magician, just a few dollars. To discover what it really takes to be a good magician about $200,000.

Well, in my case it doesn't matter, 'cause it wouldn't cost less not to be a magician- I'd just be spending my savings on some other fun thing...
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"

When you get down to it, the cost is immeasurable in monetary terms if done properly. Money can be made back with diligence.
The time involved in practice, marketing, travel and other incidental activities (set-up, etc), however, does not get made up so you have to make it count. Sure, you could probably get by with minimal time investment, and end up being the magician they call when they want to make minimal expenditures for services. Just a thought

Zero...point...zero.
If you spend money on toys (magi call them "props") then all you are is someone who plays with their toys in front of people, whether at private parties or the grand stage. |

Can someone define "good magician". Does it have to do with developing an understanding audiences?
I think I vote for Michael Baker's answer and to speed up the matter I'd add listening to what successful magicians say (and think about it). The currency is definitely time. Some geniuses like David Williamson, John Carney, Gaetan Bloom, etc... get it faster than serious scholar... (sob!)
