Can you be more specific... i.e., a pistol, a rifle, who's going to fire it, etc.?

Not sure who will be firing it. I do want it to be safe. I just don't know what items are out there for this type of trick. I would like to ask someone in the audience from the audience to pull the trigger. This person could be in on it, if need be.

I have a movie prop pistol that I use for my sidekick. It is extremely realistic. It does not have to fire but can use blanks.

The audience member would HAVE to be in on it..

Who in their right mind.. even as part of a magic show.. would EVER fire a gun at another person's head?

Perhaps in parts of SouthEast LA.. but not in a theater....

Any sporting goods store should have -- or be able to get -- blank guns (or starter pistols). This is what we've used in theater for years. but be careful ... they can give powder burns at close range.

This is where I got mine. http://www.iar-arms.com/index.html I use the primer only blanks. The primer only are the right loudness for smaller venues. Starter pistols are to loud. I would buy several options of blanks to get the right loudness that you are looking for.

Be very careful. Even blanks have killed people.

They make some Air-Soft pellet guns that look and feel very real. You might look into these, available at sporting stores.

After doing a little research following the links above, it looks to me like the Olympia 6 replica revolver would be the best buy of the lot. It holds 8 rounds of .22 crimp blanks and has the classic 'starter gun' look. $28.95 from:

A box of 100 blanks is another $7.00.

Braddini, I once did this same sort of effect I bought the Glock 17 lookalike gun from: http://www.8mmblankgun.com/products.php?cat=39
it's safe and the blank can NOT hurt you in this kind of gun! the 8mm blank give a loud report (sound) and after it was fired you would see the crowd just looking with amazment!
Now let me clear up the thing about people getting hurt or killed with blnaks, that because they place blanks in a REAL gun! Yes there is a danger there but that danger is gone when you place blanks in a Blank shooting gun like the one I mentioned above.
