Is there a difference between masonite and the "handyman board" at the Home Depot?

I think masonite is now called "hardboard."

Hiya, Four:
The real question is whether there is a difference between "tempered" hardboard (the generic term for the Masonite panel you referenced) and "service grade" hardboard. Both products are essentially particle board, wood fibres held together with resin. The "service grade" product is a light beige colour and snaps easily; it paints well and produces a nice finish. The "tempered" product is a dark brown colour, it's heavier, and does not as break easily. Tempered hardboard takes a nicer paint finish and is a stronger panel. For non-structural applications, either product would suffice; tempered panels require less bracing or support and would be more durable. Leland |
