I have come to the conclusion that you need to observe how the box will be handled in order to determine how it should be designed.

For example, the performer will have two thumb tips on so the switches need to be easily accessible while holding the box and on the non-audience side while the speaker, lights, and any other decoration need to be easily visible from the audience side. I think a good size would be 8" x 8" x 2-1/2". That would fit in a normal man's hands well. The interior needs to be easily accessible for battery changes. It should have adjustable volume control for different size venues. It needs enough volume for the audience to hear it clearly. I have run some tests and have found that a 6" speaker being driven by a 10 watt amp provides adequate volume for a medium size venue.

I'm sure that others may have other opinions but as a retired engineer, that's my take on it.

Has anyone considered building this with a grill igniter instead of tungsten wire? These are pretty low cost.

Battery Operated spark generator: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U8L92GO?psc=1
Mechanical spark generator: http://www.lowes.com/pd_97311-451-448468......+ignitor

The mechanical uses no batteries at all. The battery operated one seems like it would last a lot longer than the juice consumed heating a tungsten wire.

Also wondering if anyone has just used the spark generator from a butane grill lighter. That would be essentially free if it worked.

I like the cigar box versions of the Photos on the link Pop posted. Cigar boxes are wood, look good and are just the right size.

I noticed infinity lights are the rage and could be a low cost alternative to a plasma light. They come in coasters, necklaces and lamp sizes. There is kind of an implied time travel in their look.

Wow yes the lamps are very cool. But unfortunately those people don't ship to Australia and I can't find a deal as cheap elsewhere.

Interesting idea. I wonder if they would ignite FP though?

One thing I would be wary of with spark generators is if the make the same loud clicking noise as the one on my gas cooker it would give the game away.

Also one thing that is concerning me about this thread, with all this talk of TTs, FP, ignition systems and the like, are we giving to much info out in a public area?

Should we let this thread disappear?

The device isn't secret. The method is. Everyone knows there's fire.

Just did an experiment. Grill spark igniter won't light flash paper. Too bad.

Everyone can see there is fire. I hope I am not saying too much on an open forum to reveal that the secret is the specific amplitude and frequency modulation of the audio spectrum in conjunction with the exothermic incendiary reaction that causes the molecular breakdown and reassembly for the actual teleportation. Most people will not understand Einstein's fear of relatives sufficiently to realize how it works.

I understand wanting to get away from a battery operated device but in this case, it is the best way to ignite the flash paper. Either a nichrome wire with the antenna version or a glow plug with the firing tube version will work. (If you use a glow plug, then you need to pre-load some flash cotton 1st for more reliable ignition.)

You need to remember also that you need amps, not volts to make the nichrome wire glow. For example two 9vdc batteries in parallel work better than two in series. I personally think you should try to use 12vdc for all the power needs. There are more 12vdc lights and accessories available than 9vdc products because of the automotive industry. Something to keep in mind.

You are absolutely right Gary. Did a test on my grill and the spark would not ignite the flash paper. I was wondering about glow plugs, so that is good info to know. Sounds like nichrome wire is the way to go. Interesting to note it seems to me that the e-cig and vapor industry has resulted in nichrome wire being more readily available more places than it has been in the past.

All good then. It was just a thought. Did demonstrate the devices at an IBM meeting and was surprised at the mix of those who did and didn't know about electronic ignition.
Though I didn't reveal the method of course.

I use a company here in Australia

http://www.geelongfireworks.com.au/flashfire-products-2.html

Interestingly both sites state that the nichrome wire igniters are one use only. I have had hundreds of ignitions from my home made igniters.

Does anyone know what a reasonable lifespan of a piece of wire would be? Also what gauge do people use?

I think Pop covered that in his video. Did you buy a copy yet?

Yes, about two years ago. But I think the video he sells now is updated. Smile

So this is a work in progress but I won't be doing much more. It needs a thinner more elegant aerial, the one on it now is just an old one I have hanging around.

The inside flashes between blue, green and red. But you can also have white or have them show in combinations that make other colours. There are 20 modes of flashing or pulsing to choose from or you can have it sit on one colour. The speed and duration of the flashing can be altered.

Also you can have any sound you like. Any MP3 file at all will play in this device.

Here it is with a simple flashing pattern and a sound effect I found on a free site. I plan to create my own sounds to send with the devices with a friend of mine who is an awesome sound engineer.

Also of course the black line drawn across the front will be sanded off, then a coat or three of french polish.

I probably could of taken the pics with a more salubrious background I guess.....
