" the mark of a crafstman was the way the parts you don't see are finished out." Is that the exact quote and if so who do you credit? I thought I might just hang a sighn with that on it in my shop.

Thanks for writing the book, Gimpy

That is my interpretation of the philosophy of Theo. Bamberg or Okito as he is better known. I read everything I could find about him and by him and I feel that was his philosophy even though he didn't say it so I guess you can credit me with respect for Okito.

Thanks, Steve, for the kind words about the book. Im glad you got something out of it. Ive loved being part of the magic scene and honored by the friends and customers who found their way to my door (or internet portal as the case may be).

Your pal,

I understand Okito's son wanted to be a builder so he built a beautiful table. When he showed his father, his father lifted it up and looked at the underside. And said, "It isn't finished yet."

How is "Automated Sefalaljia" different than the original. Was the box gimmicked because it was my belief that it was fully examinable. I built my own version many years ago and always believed that Busby's version wasn't any different that the original. Just a fancier box. Could someone clarify this. Isn't the Busby version in the Stewart James books?

The version published in The Jinx and the first big James book appears to be ungimmicked but since you built one, if you think about it, it is gimmicked in a very small way, but as you say is "fully examinable."

TC... think about eliminating the hook. Maybe a hook with tiny strong magnet? Palm it off.

Thanks Pete, I may do something like that as I go on. Right now I'm deep into the original 1939 version using a borrowed ring and the safety pin, handkerchief, ball and glass, cigar and milk (I may do a beer bottle as an accessory since I like beer a lot better than milk personally). The only thing I'd change on the ring on tape is to use Magician's rope instead of the tape. The original is my starting point and I'm trying to keep myself out of the way of that.

Watch for a video of the self smoking cigar on the site very soon.

Busby's Automated Sefalalgia isn't detailed in the Stewart James books.

All the other Sefalalgia's are in the Stewart James books.

Busby's Automated Sefalalgia isn't just a fancier box, it contains multiple gimmicks.

I don't think the hook is neccessarily a bad thing. If you use a magnetic hook, and explain that the ring will be hung from it, it can be justified.

Agreed, the cup hook in James 1939 version is certainly justified by hanging the ring on it. It makes more sense to me than some other variations.

I do love the linked ropes from Dean's Box but that's Dean's variation of the hook and his device so I will leave that for others to copy.

Today was the first live trial of the self smoking cigar as per the 1939 routine. If you go to the Sefalaljia website below and scroll down theres a 13 second video in wmv. I don't know if it runs on a Mac or not. Maybe somebody can let me know.

I've made my own sefalaljia box based fairly closely on the original SJ article (though with a few elements from Dean's Box) but I've not had much luck getting the ball and glass phase to work. Has anyone got experience of this? I have difficulty working out the best thread - ITR is too difficult to thread and not strong enough. Fishing twine is too shiny and visible. Also a rubber ball makes too much noise when it falls in the glass, but a sponge ball looks wrong. Any ideas?

Yes, and don't forget to wear a black shirt.

OK my solution, which works, is to use the "invisible thread" that tailors use, but to darken it with black permanent marker so that it is no longer shiny. This is strong but much less visible than ordinary cotton thread. And a sponge ball. And a good realistic skull, such as James specifies. I may say that this bit of the routine plays exceptionally well - better than any other, even though it is so simple.

Where did you get your skull?? Well, not your skull, but the skull you're using??? Is it a full sized skull?? That still doesn't sound right so I hope you know what I mean!!??

And one more question if you don't mind, did you build your box to the SJ dimensions from Jinx??
