If you want on of George's, Okito-Berg Tipover Boxes you had better hurry and get it. My Steven's catalog came in the mail yesterday and I noticed that 8 of the 12 have been sold already! That just leaves 4 more....and some or all of those may be gone by now!

I was going through a collection in a local historical museum and stumbled upon one of these original boxes. I think it had been repainted as the ornate decals were pretty much gone. But a geat concept.

Do you sand between coats, or get the sanding done before staining?

All the sanding is done before staining.

The process goes like this:

1 Sand the wood to the level and smoothness you want.
2 Dampen the wood surface with water.
3 Let dry completely.
4 Lightly sand the little hairs off of the wood that have stood up from the wetting process.
5 Stain the wood by hand.
6 Sand the varnish between coats with 600 wet and dry sandpaper.
7 Sand final coats with 400 steel wool pads.
8 Sand final coat with pumice and oil.

Process changes with how many coats of varnish one desires to put on a piece.

Do you have any links or other info on it?

George,
Send me a regular email and I will send you some quick snaps I did. It took some real talking to be able to take photos in a museum setting.
