The rivet being in the corner of the "Riveted" version seems much less impossible, to my eyes, than Angelo's original.

Are you sure that Denis Behr's routine is a copy?
I am sure that Denis Behr's routine is not a copy.

Eighteen years ago, Denis Behr published his routine in the german magic magazine "Magische Welt".
To be more precise that was in 2002 ("Magische Welt" No. 1/2002).

His routine is called "Öl-Wasser gelocht".

When did Angelo Carbone publish his "Out of Order" routine?

I think Denis acknowledges this in his errata sheet for the book:

"Page 77: Footnote 70: Tis clever effect was "Out of Order" by Angelo Carbone. It
turned out that Loren Meier's "Spectacle" is an unauthorized copy of Carbone's "Out of
Order". My apologies go to Angelo for this mistake. "

Just to clarify Riveted Monte was initially made without permission but then we spoke and sorted something out. As for Riveted by magic tricks that's just a blatant copy.

I've had another go but still can't get them to interlock. It's very tricksy Smile

I won't give up though. I'm gonna do this or die in the attempt.

Don't give up! It's like riding a bike. Very difficult to do it at first but once you get the knack it becomes second nature.

Who invented it?
Denis Behr (2002), Angelo Carbone (???), or ...?
What is an original and what is a copy? Who stole from whom?
Can somebody say something about it?

Angelo, maybe you can say something about it.

Well, in his book Handcrafted Card Magic (Volume 1), Denis Behr says:

"The inspiration for this effect came one evening at the magic club in 1997, where a member performed a dealer's item in which the middle two of four giant cards, permanently riveted together, changed places when the cards were rotated once around their pivot point. While I admired the principle, I found this effect to be more of a puzzle or challenge (much like for example the Imp Bottle) than a magical performance piece"

The word "principle" above has a footnote reference. The footnote says:

"This ingenious effect was "Out of Order" 1994 by Angelo Carbone. An early form of the used principle can be traced back to Tom Sellers "New Principle Card Trick" (1936), in which two cards with rather large slits were used for visual penetration and monte effects. Harry Lorayne, Bruce Cervon and Larry Jennings (among others) published applications of this principle.

The basic principle is very old. Lots of magicians have used variations of it.

I created it in 1994. It was reviewed in Genii magazine and then the copies came out. Dennis created a version and then credited me as he accidentally credited a knock off version. There was no riveted card trick like Out of Order prior to 1994. I have many knock offs in my collection. Here are just 9 of them...

Sorry photo won't upload despite fitting size requirements.

Hi Angelo, is it possible to still support you and the original?

With all of the new releases coming out using complicated stuff, it is a pleasure to regain focus on this nice uncomplicated fooler using only four riveted cards.

I am an old timer who believes in the classics. They still have the ability to fool an audience if performed well and are the foundation of magic which I suggest is important.

How many people new to magic pass by the classics to buy those new releases, many or most which are based on those classic principles? I say too many perhaps.

Anyway, Angelo has a fantastic track record releasing great magic! My main connection to Angelo is with Tenyo and Angelo has had some of his great ideas released by Tenyo and most of them are now discontinued collectibles.

In Denis Behr’s “Magic On Tap” videos he clearly, correctly and respectfully credits Angelo Carbone as the inventor of the principle. I’d like to thank Mr. Carbone for creating this brilliant effect because its use in Behr’s climax to his 6 card Oil and Water routine makes it as miraculous as Daryl’s brilliant Ultimate Ambition climax for the Ambitious Card. It’s what made me want to add Oil and Water to my repertoire.
