Hey guys,

About three months ago, I learned a little effect called "Will The Cards Match". I finally got around to performing it this past week, and it gets amazing reactions. I just wanted to know if anyone else has ever heard of this. I have yet to find another magician who knows about it other than the one who taught it to me. Thanks!

I believe Will The Cards Match is a Larry Becker creation.
Larry himself posted about this trick in the thread of Gilbreath Principle.

shanla,

That may be it. I sent an email to Larry Becker to make sure. Until then, I thought I would share a description of this great effect, so here it is:

The magician removes 10 cards and points out that he has two equal piles, each containing the same five cards. One pile is placed face down while the other is placed face up. The magician then explains that he will spell “WILL THE CARDS MATCH” using one card for each letter and that he will transfer one card from the top of a pile to the bottom of the pile for each letter, stopping after each word. The spectator can tell the magician to switch between the face up and face down piles at any time they want and as many times as they want. When they say switch, the magician changes piles and keeps on spelling until he finishes the word. When he finishes spelling a word he takes the top card off of each pile (face-up and face-down) and places them aside like a blackjack hand. Therefore, when he is finished spelling all the words, there are five pairs of cards, each containing one face-up and one face-down card. The spectator selects one of the five sets, and the magician points out that it is a good thing they picked that pair, since none of the others match. The magician shows the other four pairs, and none of them match. He then reveals the selected pair, and the two cards do match. For the final kicker, the magician states that he wouldn't want anyone to lose, so he snaps his fingers, and the other four pairs now match.

Thanks for the info!

Jon Tremaine does this routine also, it is called "the last two cards match" and it is credited by him to Larry Becker. He has been using it for YEARS so it has been around for a while. Very good little trick by the way.

Yes, this trick has been around a long time, and it is excellent. My friends above are correct--it is Mr. Becker's creation.

Hi all,

There is an excellent variation of this trick that appears in the book by Bill Herz and Paul Harris. If you can find the "Secrets of An Astonishing Executive", you will find a way to do this with business cards.

Larry Becker also suggested a very good in-hand false shuffle by Tom Daugherty. Please check it out at the thread above.

In the thread shania-san indicated, I breifly explained Tooru Suzuki's version, which Mr.Maric paid good money for perfoming right for TV. Mr.Maric and I think it is the best version for psychic entertainer. As I already published it here, of course you have performing right anywhere.

Thanks for all of the information guys. I emailed Mr. Becker and he confirmed that this was indeed his creation. I am going to try and find his notes on it because I just learned the effect by watching another magician and listening to a very short explanation. I pieced most of it together myself. However, I love this effect!

I am on spring break right now, and brought home with me were the 3 series of AOA.

I looked through them again last night and tried to find some gems that were overlooked by me .... ***.
I came across the same trick as you did my friend.
SAME TRICK.

only PH's version is done with 5 business cards and were signed by 5 spectator.

and at the end, all 5 signatures match.

This is a small world my friend LOL.

I have been looking on this site for a while now and FINALLY found this thread about WTCM. I totally forgot how it worked and now can do it again! It is a great routine...I do the same this as young daniel but I can't remember for the life of me, why, do you tell the spectator that one pile will be face up and one face down...
please PM me because I'll never find this thread again...

thank you in advance!

You will find in Jeff Busby's EPOPTICA YEARBOOK 1984 on page 294 Paul Curry's MATCHMAKER, and as far as remember Larry Becker's version was published in not until 1987 in Harry Lorayne's Apocalypse (Vol.10, p.1349). Jeff notes that the basic idea can be tracked back to Stewart James.

Danie1113,
If this is the type of effect you're learning to perform, you off to a wonderful start.
Someday you'll brag to yougsters that you actually got to communicate with Larry Becker!

Well I thought I'd bring this thread back to to the top. Check out the link above to Larry Becker's full explanation of this great effect.

Just wanted to illustrate how customizable this routine is. My parents, Sari and Al, just had their 60th anniversary celebration. We are five children. So I got ten jumbo cards, and put separate photos of the five children on the cards. Marked the cards on the back so I'd know which sibling's picture was on which card.

I had my siblings line up in birth order--I happen to fall in the middle. The magic phrase was "Sari and Al Forever." As my parents spelled, I distributed each pair to the proper sibling. At the end, as we all shouted the magic phrase together, we siblings held up our cards--and of course each sibling was holding up a pair of photos of themselves.

It was quite a memorable experience for all--including my siblings who had no idea what the outcome was going to be!

Jack Shalom

P.S. There's a thread which explains how to customize the spelling phrase here:

When I learned it it was called... When The Magic Works - same trick - great effect! I like to get out 5 cards and then tear them all in half.
