Hey guys, a quick question...
Why do the dealers pat the table before dealing any community cards in texas hold'em? My only guess would be to alert the players that a card is coming up or maybe to show their hands are empty.
be well,
JW

It is a signal to the camera that the cards are the comunity cards. so it's basically proceedure.

Thanks Isykle, I'm not sure how it helps surveillance, but you are right that it's procedure.

After a few hours of searching, I found this answer for anyone else that's interested:

"Before burning a card the dealer shall lightly tap the table, letting the players know that he is about to deal. This enables players to stop the dealer's action if the betting is incomplete."

That's right Wess. I would have saved you a few hours of seachng but only just read it, sorry.

The dealers also "Wash" their hands in many casino games as they change dealer to show the eye they have not nicked and chips.

A term they use in gaming is "Time" it sort of means: Stop the action, I think there has been a mistake!
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

The table pat is really a house or dealer habit.

The Professional Poker Dealers Handbook by Mason Malmuth et al makes no call for the dealer to pat the table at any time.

It's a bit of drama that isn't found at all tables.

The concept of a player stopping the deal for some reason in a big game is one that is a bit of a stretch, the professional dealer would never begin the deal if there was still "business" to take place.

I think you'd better check, again, the Professional Poker Dealers Handbook. I lent my copy to a friend but, I am almost positive that the table pat is included, explained, and encouraged within it.

I'll definitely look again CC, it's been a while since I read the entire text, and I did check the book before posting, but I could certainly be wrong.

They pat the table as a sign to the other players only. has nothing to do with security. it just makes sure that the other players are ready for the next card.

for moves like betting in the dark they pat means that no other betting can occur and that the next card it about to be shown.

also if someone didn't call the blind or a raise and the dealer did not notice it and started the flop or whatever it would void the hand and cause a problem so the pat alerts the others at the table that cards are coming. also at like a finial table helps the tounry director when hes watching.
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.

I shall stand corrected by CC, Mason emailed me back to inform me of the reference pages in the book, and patting the table is in fact covered in The Professional Poker Dealers Handbook.

I need new eyes.

Having been wrong once in this thread, this directly from the book.

Tapping the table indicates to the players that the dealer is about to BURN a card.
The Professional Poker Dealers Handbook, pg. 232.

Right... and when do we burn a card?

At the beginning of a round! Smile

Unless of course, the dealer would like to deal out the entire board before even the pre-flop action begins....

Thanks for including that quote, Silver. Great book, isn't it?

My forgetfullness has actually inspired me to pull it out again for a re-read.

It's actually got a lot more information in it than "just dealing cards".

I just thought it was interesting that the tap was to indicate that a card was about to be burned, and by extension, as you've pointed out CC, all of the action that follows the burn.
