I would like to do a whole magic show with my puppet. At first he is helping me, but I keep messing up. Then he takes over and does some pretty good tricks. The color-changing bow tie looks good, what else? I know about Axtell and the magic rope. He can help a little with his mouth.

A square circle production is always good and can be used to produce a variety of different items depending on the load size.

I like it. Thanks Chuck. My puppet is a bird, I could produce an egg and he could make jokes about the act has already done that.

Appearing cane, change bag, a sponge balls from puppets mouth routine, dove pan, lota bowl, foo can.

I actually do a card trick with 1ft x 2ft cards (only 4) and my puppet.

And I used to produce mouth coils from my birdie's mouth. Smile

BUT, you must get MYLAR mouth coil. Paper mouth coil breaks easily...

You could also use a dove pan and crack an egg (real or fake into the pan and then produce a comedy item anything from a stuffed bird to a bird in a prison outfit (Jail bird) or even a dead duck. Just another idea to get your juices flowing.

My slippy the seal produces a fish using his own fishing rod made out of a magic wand and a rope.
my bullfrog turns a young assistant into a rabbit ala rabbit wand.
my verne produces a string of sausages out of a change bag and then a large silk of smiley the clown.
you could also hand your puppet your breakaway wand or fan for some fun.
other productions come to mind using crystal cylinders etc.

enjoy,

Steve Taylor has a DVD/Video called Fooling your Dummy (Thanks again Sluggo)

It teaches one handed magic tricks and princepals that can be used with ventriloquism as you perform.

All kinds of neat effects and routines are on that video.

Axtell has a vent routine for Vern the Bird where you and your puppet do a rope trick. The full script is here: http://www.axtell.com/axtrax/rope.htm But, you can purchase the AxTrax recording from his website if you want.

One idea would be to have a helper come up from the audience to "help the puppet" with his magic trick. The helper can use both hands to do things like open the drawer box, remove the lid from the dove pan, hold all the eggs the puppet bird is laying, etc.

Not exactly magic, but it's in the same vein...

Have your puppet hold the rod as you spin a plate on it....Or balancing act...

It's a neat idea for a filler act, or something short to mix things up a bit.

I perform a change bag/ dove pan routine with my Vent doodles (Vern). You can do nearly any magic as a vent. You can also do a really neat mind reading card trick with a figure.
It's basicaaly a forcing the card trick but looks great. Steve Taylor does it and it really blows people away.

I just made a post in the "The Little Darlings" section called "Mind Reading Teddy Bear" about a new puppet that does a magic trick...the puppet itself is a large teddy bear dressed like a magician. Really cool prop.

Thanks everyone. If you just have an idea for a puppet trick, please add it on.

Sluggo, is the forcing the card trick on Steve's Fooling the Dummy?

Thanks again,

I have an appearing 10ft pole in the little suitcase that the figure is in...

"Isn't it amazing what can fit in one of these suit cases?"

Do pole then bring out dummy.

Stiff Rope.

And remember, the figure can help you hold certain things with it's mouth. This is very natural for animal puppets, especially birds.

Vito Lupo meets Jay Johnston, was the basis of balls from my and a puppets mouth.

It Can't Be Done Any Slower, by Levand , an oil and water with 6 cards, can be done with a puppet on the other hand.

For two handed magicians like me it is great motivation to utilize this interesting one handed oil and water.

Be safe, well and creative.
