Hospital policies must be complied for the safety of everyone... it does not matter if they ask or not, if there is an existing policy regarding latex or any substance for that matter, then we have to comply to make sure everybody is safe...

If we give out balloons and make 50 sick kids happy...BUT make 1 kid more sick because of an allergic reaction to the balloon, something tells me that it's just not right...

...its like buying your own children toys with lead content... you make them happy but at the same time expose them to danger.

As entertainers...we are not limitted Smile I don't think skipping a trick that uses a few balloons can ruin our act for our hospital gigs.

My two cents worth Smile

Now as for puppets Smile which is a problem since the Ax puppets are mostly latex...I will still comply with hospital rules. The Ax puppets are so lovable and huggable and any child or anyone for that matter in a hospital can simply run and hug it... specially if you manipulate your puppets like Steve Petra and Kimmo Smile

If you are a Pro Axtell like me and insist on using Ax puppets in hospitals where there are "Latex Warning" posted...well FYI, AX has vinyl puppets like Vern, Orangutan, Gorilla and Chimp...not to forget other products like the Big Baby, Magic Drawing Board, Special FX Drawing Board and Off the Meter.

Hospitals are where sick people go to feel better...we go there to entertain sick people...no harm in following hospital rules...latex balloons and puppets may or may not harm but rules are rules...

This is just my personal view...my wife has been in and out of the hospital and some hospital rules may be very annoying but regardless if they are valid or not...they are posted for a reason and as family of patients, we are obligated to comply... much more if we are hired to entertain...

I think its the same thing with puppets...just use a different material Smile foam based from MAT or PAVLOV or a Hard figure...or if you are a Pro AXTELL like me, then use the Vinyl puppets...if for example you need a turtle character for your act, then use the MDB and draw a turtle...

Thanks Donald, that was some interesting reading about the history of Latex.

And Steve where can I find more info for the Lead balloons?

Actually if you are a fan and watch Mythbusters they actually took thin sheets of lead and mad a large square lead balloon, filled it with helium and floated it. So their creation did not sink like a lead balloon.

I did a search and found that there are some plastasized non-latex balloons, however I just wounder if they expell air like a regular balloon, so the fun in the balloon wand can still be had.

In case some missed it, the Balloon Council is made up of reps from Pioneer Balloon Company (Qualatex) and from Anagram International. So, I would trust their comments on the dangers of latex balloons, over other sources.

Technically latex allergies are transmitted from "dipped latex" products like balloons, rubber gloves and condoms which often use a talcum powder as a mold release agent. That powder carries the latex proteins and makes them airborne. Most latex allergies are reactive to this type of latex from everything I've read and been advised on. Our puppets are not made this way. Our Rubber is cast rather than dipped. It's a much more stable compound. Very little risk of allergens from this process. However, that doesn't matter. If a hospital says no latex. Use our Vinyl Vern. Don't risk a problem or your return booking over it.

I did a phone show a couple of years ago and the high school had a no latex policy because one student had an alergy. My Kids went to this school of 1200 so I know the reasoning. It was ridiculous but they did not budge on it.

Out of curiousity, just how many children are affected by latex? How many out of one million?

A year or so ago an agent sent me to a family day at a local private school. Five hours of balloon twisting. When I got there, I checked in with my contact and was told that as they were setting up helium balloons at the booths, a parent revealed that her child had a latex allergy. The decision was made to pay my fee, thank me, and send me home.

Speechless. But for the sake of one child, hundreds of other children went without.

Had one parent reported a grass allergy, would the entire festival been shut down?

Balloons go through a dipping bath process that leeches out the protein that people are allergic to. Most people are totally unaware of this and just make irrational calls on policy when it comes to latex.

This was posted by Ron Crowley at the Axtell Forum...you may also find it interesting.

In the early 1990's a Grade 3 teacher brought a cake to her students for a class party. A little girl ate a piece and exclaimed,"Oh no! and died within seconds. The poor teacher was devastated as were we, her friends. Later that same year a pretty, clever, second year university student died at the head table of a wedding at which she was a bridesmaid because the wedding cake had a peanut paste. Not long after a young man collapsed because a hot "pie" from a well known fast food chain had nuts in it.
Folks, the first two happened on my watch. Zip ahead two or three years and up to the present where students and teachers at my school could not even have peanuts on their breath because a young lad had a huge chance of contacting anaphylaxis. He carried an epi -pen(mini-injector)at all times.
Folks, I have not wanted to write this warning but it is about something so fast..so deadly that I suggest one never introduce nut substances to children.

Tod,
I agree that it is wrong to eliminate things for the sake of one child but that is the world we live in today. The minority rule the majority.

Pardon me...but its never wrong to eliminate things for the sake of one child as far as us entertainers are concerned.

If there is one child in the room who is scared of hard figures,Ill be glad not to perform with it...the kid could have nightmares and Im the one to blame...much more if its an allergy to a specific substance which could be fatal to this ONE child...

However, I also strongly believe that the parents of the child with an allergy for example to latex balloons have the responsibility of keeping their child safe. Why bring your child to a birthday party where balloons are found in huge quantity... specially parties here in Manila, balloons are everywhere! Smile

Or why put your son in front row when you know that the show is a Ventriloquist act if your kid has dummy phobia or whatever they call it?

What I want to know is just WHEN DID ALL OF THIS HAPPEN in this world????

When I was a child you NEVER heard of ANY child having a "Deathly Alergic React ion" to Peanuts, Latex, etc.....

We ALL survived just fine with Balloons & Peanut Butter Sandwiches!
