Does anyone know the effect of the bunny bucket? I am not familiar with it. Is it worth it/recomended?
Thanks Joey |

This effect is often used with ducks, hence you're more likely to come across a "Duck Bucket" than a bunny bucket. Usually the Duck Buckets are slightly larger. It can be a very effective illusion. It depends on the maker and design of the bucket. Harlin Magic makes a very good one .
http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eharlinmagic/harlin2.html The Harlin bucket design is nice because it gives the appearance that it is opened up from both ends and the audience can see clear through it . http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eharlinmagic/dropoutbucket.html Owen Magic Supreme also makes a good one: http://www.owenmagic.com/Livestock/Lives......k_2.html http://www.owenmagic.com/Livestock/Duck_......uxe.html The key is coming up with a good routine. If it's just used for a bare presentation of "show bucket empty ....pull rabbit or duck out " it can be pretty boring and there are better (and cheaper) ways to produce a rabbit . David Copperfield and Ed Alonzo both have good Duck Bucket routines. To me the bucket always reminds me of an old-fashioned hand-cranked ice cream maker. By attaching a fake crank to the top of the bucket you can do a routine where you appear to pour milk in the bucket (with a magic milk pitcher ) and put in ice cubes and appear to pour sugar into the bucket , then crank it and produce a beautiful white rabbit , named "Ice Cream" . (or if you mix in some chocolate with the milk, sugar, and ice cubes , produce a chocolate ice cream brown bunny or a mixed brown and white bunny like a "Dutch" breed of rabbit) http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/ima......utch.jpg |

By the way , if you'd like to see the Duck/Bunny Bucket in action there are two different clips available online of David Copperfield using the bucket . (I believe D.C. uses an Owen Magic Supreme bucket) .
This is the way Copperfield usually does it now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQbvRUMG0q8 This second clip is his earlier, shorter presentation: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3054008430023321613 The second video, posted on Google Video is the entire 1984 TV Special "The Magic of David Copperfield - Grand Canyon" . The duck bucket routine starts at the 34:00 minute mark . |

To be honest with you I was very disappointed in the duck bucket. I acutally saw one from Daytona Magic a few years back. I think I it was going for like $300 and felt that it was WAY TOO OBVIOUS as to how it worked. If I'm not mistaken I think Harry Allen's selling pitch to me was that it was used by the famous David Copperfield. Nonetheless, I felt that it was NOT something I would ever consider using in my shows. I prefer using other "bunny" small illusions that are far more interesting and more deceiving. But this is just my opinion...

I used the bunny bucket in close to 100 shows this year and it was a great effect. It seemed obvious to me as well, even when I had never had it I figured out what was happening. With that being said, I never had anyone question me afterwards about the two openings-the routine was fun and it distracted from the "I know how its done" syndrome. That's the real secret, just have a great routine and nobody cares about how it works. That's why Copperfield's routine worked-it was hilarious!
I produce a snake out of mine by the way-it works even better than a bunny! |
