I went to edit some music I had in my iTunes library and couldn't get them to work or even download over to Audacity. A tech friend of mine checked it out and said it was iTunes is an m4p format, which is uncompatable to Audacity working only with mp3's. Any suggestions?

ps) when I downloaded iTunes, I did download the Windows XP version, as I have a PC.
pps) yes, I was able to find some mp3's elsewhere, which worked fine on Audacity.

Shouldn't you be able to convert your iTunes songs to another format? I would look for an application to convert them to a usuable format. For instance, when I download mp3's (such as some motivational programs I have purchased), I have to convert them to AIFF (a Mac format) for them to burned to an audio CD. (My CD player doesn't play mp3's.)

iTunes can convert M4Ps into MP3s provided they are not PROTECTED M4Ps. Among the "advanced" preferences for iTunes, you'll find importing parameters that can be set to "MP3." Thereafter, you can right-click any selected song or group of selected songs and "convert to MP3."

Protected M4Ps are deliberately difficult to convert, but it can be done. Burn an audio CD with as many M4P tracks as possible (17-20 at most). Then rip the songs off the CD, once it's burned. The ripped files will be unprotected MP3 files.

Use a CD-RW for this operation; that way you can erase it and use it again later.

Another option for individual songs is to use a digital audio recorder program (no idea what works best in Windows; "Wiretap" works best for a Mac). Just play the song and use the digital recorder to record it. This faster than the burn-CD approach for one or two short songs or sections of songs.

If you simply need to edit the time period that can be done right in iTunes. Go to "info" then "options" on a song. It will allow you to set the starting and ending point for the song. No other program required!

For other edits I use Quicktime Pro. The upgrade to PRO is something like $29. (a quick download) and gives you lots of import export and file conversion options. That way you could export a song in an Audacity or whatever.

The.m4p means the file is a protected AAC file. If it was open, the extension would be .m4a

Do what Avocat said, use iTunes to burn the songs you wnat to a CD, then re-rip them to your hard drive into the format you'd like (Format can be selected in the Preferences) and then edit away in Audacity.

I have an MP3 Rocket file, and an itunes file. How do I get that MP3 Rocket music on my itunes file, and into my ipod? This question has been a monumental dilemma for me that I have not even begun to understand until today. The itunes store selection ABSOLUTELY SUCKS.

Al, in iTunes, go up to File > Add File to Library.

It will bring up a window so you can browse through your hard drive. Find your MP3 Rocket File, and click "Open". It should put the song into your iTunes library, and automatically put it on your iPod the next time you sync.

Kevin MY DEAR FRIEND
I have learned very much by both making, and reading posts at the magic Café, but there is absolutely nothing I have learned to date that comes close to the VALUABLE VALUABLE answer you just gave me about downloading music to my ipod. I got a 4GB nano for my birthday in September, and I have been asking that question since September. I am now going to buy an ipod compatible radio for my car, because of all the new cool music I have just downloaded to my ipod. I just added 120 hand picked songs from my Rocket MP3 file to my itunes file, music that the itune store did not have. Kevin my friend this is like a birthday present in May.

PS- just for the record you have to download them one at a time, and it was well worth the time.

Al, there is also the option "Add folder to Library" so you don't have to do it one at a time. Just put all of your music in a folder together - on the desktop will do, and follow similar steps as one file.

No trouble at all for the tip, iPod and iTunes should always let you listen to the music you want.

There are a few books on the market that claim to teach the "ins and outs" of iTunes and the iPod, perhaps looking into one of those would be helpful?

Happy listening!

Or simply select all the files and drag them into the iTunes window. Even easier.

Hi Everyone
Since I made my last post here on May 5th we have added 200 songs to both my wife, and my 4GB ipod nano's, and we are just as happy today as we were on May 5th.

Or use the stereo recording option on Audacity. You click record then play the song.
